This year's Primetime Emmy Awards has to go down as one of the most exciting, historical, and record-breaking ceremonies in a long time. Director and star of Atlanta Donald Glover won two of the three awards he was nominated for, one of which was Best Director for a Comedy Series making him the first African American to do so. Lena Waithe became the first African American woman to win for Comedy Writing, Julia Louis-Dreyfus became the performer with most wins for a single role, and The Handmaid's Tale director Reed Morano became only the third woman in history to win a Drama Directing Emmy, the first since Mimi Leder won for her work on ER 22 years ago.

But if we're not talking about smashing glass ceilings or historical accomplishments then the big winners of the night were Hulu and HBO. Hulu beat out Netflix to become the first streaming series to win an Emmy in the best drama series category for its critically acclaimed show The Handmaid's Tale, receiving awards for Best Drama Series, Best Director (Reed Morano), Best Lead Actress (Elisabeth Moss), Best Supporting Actress (Ann Doud), and Best Writing for a Drama Series (Bruce Miller), while HBO's miniseries Big Little Lies received awards for Best Limited Series, Best Limited Series Actress (Nicole Kidman), Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series (Alexander Skarsgård), Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series (Laura Dern), and Best Director for a Limited Series (Jean-Marc Vallee).
