Check out this sci-fi LED lighting masterclass with Digital Sputnik on ‘Iron Sky’

We take a behind-the-scenes peek into a dark warehouse in North Hollywood where the Finnish crew behind Iron Sky: The Coming Race has set up a makeshift spaceship to film one of the final scenes for their long awaited sequel. In the following behind-the-scenes featurette and videos, we get a glimpse into how the Iron Sky team was able to partner with Digital Sputnik to create a fully immersive on-set lighting experience by utilizing its DS Line products and workflow in real time with Pixel Mapping in DaVinci Resolve. Let's check it out!

The Iron Sky Franchise

If you haven’t heard of the Iron Sky franchise, you’re missing out on one of the most intriguing dark comedy Nazi space dramas… well… ever. Maybe you have seen the viral trailer which includes scenes of Hitler riding around on a dinosaur, but if you haven’t, you should check it out above.

Digital Sputnik LEDs

As you can see in the behind-the-scenes featurette above, the Iron Sky team was proud to join up with Digital Sputnik to use some of their newest light control technology and to demonstrate how it can be showcased in a masterclass presentation. The team used an array of their DS Line products, and a wall of LED lights was set up around an old plane’s cockpit to create a light program for a sequence to shoot a surprisingly complex and dynamic scene.

In the featurette, we also get a glimpse at how the Iron Sky team was able to use DaVinci Resolve to create a timeline with cloudy skies, a nice sunset and some bright volcano eruptions which was then run through MadMapper to map out onto the light fixtures as if they were screens. Depending on the scene’s needs, a participant from the workshop would simply need to drag the lights’ diagram onto part of the corresponding timeline and - BAM - moving lighting magic!

A Masterclass Workshop

This Masterclass workshop was a first in a series of Digital Sputnik collaborations with filmmakers on a variety of shoots around the world, all of which will be filmed for a behind-the-scenes series on how to find simple lighting solutions that give the right cinematic results.

Iron Sky: The Coming Race, after years of production, is finally wrapped and has a release date and is set for the late spring of 2019. You can find out more on the film’s website here.
