In case you missed the news, there’s a new iPhone in town, and this bad boy is set to revolutionize (smartphone) cinematography! How, you ask? Well, great question—the new iPhone 13 is the first in Apple’s historic line to offer a new “Cinematic” Mode.
And, while the debate as to whether or not your iPhone is actually going to replace your Sony or Canon camera anytime soon might be up in the air, the new cinematic prospects for this new Apple smartphone are indeed quite intriguing.
Making things all more intriguing though is the news today that FiLMiC Inc. is announcing full support for ProRes Video on the new iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max (see which iPhone 13 model is right for you).
Let’s take a look at what FiLMiC Pro v6.17 is set to offer to any aspiring iPhone filmmakers out there.
FiLMiC Pro v6.17 ProRes Support
With this new release, the iPhone 13 is now set to be the industry’s first mobile cinema camera to deliver full support for ProRes Video. Smartphone videographers will now have access to the same codecs favored by professional filmmakers and content creators alike, as it truly unlocks the best cinematic options for video recording.
With FiLMiC Pro v6.17, you can now select between four different ProRes variants, including ProRes Proxy, ProRes LT, ProRes 422, and ProRes 422 HQ. All four of these options are 10-bit and offer 4:2:2 chroma subsampling and all-intra encoding.
Max bitrates will range from 170Mbps at 4K (Proxy) all the way up to approximately 735Mbps at 4K (422 HQ). FiLMiC Pro also unlocks ProRes capture at up to a maximum of 30fps in 4K and 60fps in 1080 by using FiLMiC Pro’s manual controls, live analytics, and medallion scopes for your cinematic needs.
