As video editors with legacy formats have been keeping an eye on for several months now, Apple has finally updated its Final Cut Pro X (version 10.4.6) to as part of its transition to macOS technology (read more about why here).

While Apple has been warning about this for some time, it means that you’ll need to double check and make sure you convert all of your files and media based on QuickTime 7 codecs before you update to this latest version.

Final Cut Pro X 10.4.6 Update

FCP X Update

Along with the MacOS update, the FCP X 10.4.6 version update will automatically convert any QuickTime 7 based codecs to compatible 64-bit formats. However, once the new OS is installed, you’ll no longer be able to even open any unconverted files and will have to go through a tricky detection and conversion process outlined by Apple here.

The FCP X 10.4.6 update also includes several small updates and bug fixes including timeline display issues, missing files and audio hum removal. Motion (5.4.3) and Compressor (4.4.4) are also being updated to automatically detect the newly incompatible legacy formats and improved support for ProRes RAW and RAW HQ.
