Watch 10 Animated Short Films on the Shortlist for the Academy Awards

The Academy Award shortlist for best Animated Short Film is here!

I know we all have aspirations, but I think one shared by many of the people who read this site is to compete for an Academy Award. I know it seems far fetched, but I practice my speech in the shower all the time, and I think it could be really good.

One category that I think we all could compete in is Best Short Film. Sure, there's lots of competition, but making a good short film is not as crazy as you think. You might be able to write and shoot a few a year if you keep them small enough, and all you have to do is play in a few festivals to get noticed.

I know, all that is hard! But it's not impossible.

Anyway, as you dare to dream, check out these 10 animated short films. They made the shortlist for the Animated Short Film category. 96 total films qualified, and members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch voted to determine the shortlist.

Check them out and let me know what you think in the comments.

The Traces animation style is quite amazing. Hand draw animation like this never fails to impress me with the incredible amount of time and artwork involved.

For people in NA I guess. I really don't think it has as strong of an impact on other countries.

Which other countries? Is the sudden and tragic death of a child somehow unique to North America?

No, but the film works much more in North America because school shootings are so prevalent and feel much closer to home there.

That strikes me as a rather narrow reading of the short but okay

If you think the way the kid dies does not have much to do with the impact the film has on North American audiences then agree to disagree.

I just don't understand the dismissiveness. Tragedy is tragedy, regardless of the specifics. If the tragedy were something unique to another country, I wouldn't be dismissive of it as not relevant to me. I don't have children. Should I dismiss it as not relevant to me?

Read my original comment again. Never said it was not tragic to other audiences, I just said it has a much stronger impact in NA.

I said it was devastating. You implied not so much so to audiences outside of North America. That strikes me as a narrow and dismissive take.

Why was it important to say that at all?

The first link to watch the whole film takes you to a russian hacking website that keeps asking you to install a piece of software that's a backdoor. Beware.
