When I was a kid, I never had a clown puppet or a stuffed animal. It makes me think these were an idea manufactured in the 70s or 80s.

I think it probably came from John Wayne Gacy being a serial killer and a clown as well, which makes sense, but nevertheless, the evil clown trope is a favorite, and there have been some landmark movies to exploit it and use it to entertain us.

Today, I want to go over my ten favorites.

Let's dive in.

1. It (2017)

This remake of the adaptation of Stephen King's novel became a cultural phenomenon.

It sort of cemented all the tropes we know and made the killer clown part of the mainstream. Bill Skarsgård's portrayal of Pennywise is animalistic and genuinely unsettling, a creature of ancient evil hiding as a clown.

  • Director: Andy Muschietti
  • Writers: Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga, Gary Dauberman (based on the novel by Stephen King)
  • Key Cast: Bill Skarsgård (as Pennywise), Jaeden Martell, Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer

2. It (1990)

I was way too young when I saw this movie, but for an entire generation, Tim Curry was Pennywise.

This two-part TV miniseries traumatized countless children with its depiction of a wise-cracking, monstrous clown who feasts on fear.

While the second half is considered weaker, the first part, focusing on the characters as children, is a masterpiece of television horror.

  • Director: Tommy Lee Wallace
  • Writers: Lawrence D. Cohen, Tommy Lee Wallace (based on the novel by Stephen King)
  • Key Cast: Tim Curry (as Pennywise), Richard Thomas, John Ritter, Annette O'Toole, Harry Anderson, Tim Reid

3. Terrifier 2 (2022)

Ugh, this is a movie and a series that is absolutely macabre and absolutely gross (which is good if you like that sort of thing). It's a shockingly successful indie slasher.

Art the Clown, a silent and purely malevolent mime, became a modern horror icon with this film.

What makes Terrifier 2 stand out is its epic length, ambitious practical effects, and refusal to shy away from extreme gore.

  • Director: Damien Leone
  • Writer: Damien Leone
  • Key Cast: Lauren LaVera, Elliott Fullam, Sarah Voigt, Kailey Hyman, and David Howard Thornton (as Art the Clown)

4. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

The ultimate cult classic of the subgenre, this film leans heavily into absurdity and dark comedy, presenting a race of aliens who just happen to look like grotesque clowns.

It's imaginative, colorful, and endlessly fun—a perfect B-movie.

  • Director: Stephen Chiodo
  • Writers: Charles Chiodo, Stephen Chiodo
  • Key Cast: Grant Cramer, Suzanne Snyder, John Allen Nelson, John Vernon

5. Poltergeist (1982)

While not exclusively a "killer clown" movie, it features arguably the single most terrifying clown scene in cinematic history.

The clown doll in Robbie's room, which seems to watch him before coming to life and attacking, is probably THE foundational moment of coulrophobia.

  • Director: Tobe Hooper
  • Writers: Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais, Mark Victor
  • Key Cast: JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, Heather O'Rourke, Beatrice Straight

6. Clown (2014)

Produced by Eli Roth, this film offers a fantastic body-horror take on the theme. A loving father finds an old clown costume to wear for his son's birthday party, only to discover he can't take it off.

The suit, wig, and nose slowly merge with his body, transforming him into a child-eating demon.

  • Director: Jon Watts
  • Writers: Christopher Ford, Jon Watts
  • Key Cast: Andy Powers, Laura Allen, Peter Stormare, Elizabeth Whitmere

7. House of 1000 Corpses (2003)

Rob Zombie's directorial debut introduced the world to one of horror's most memorable modern villains: Captain Spaulding.

Played to perfection by the late Sid Haig, Captain Spaulding is less about supernatural tricks and more about gritty, realistic menace.

  • Director: Rob Zombie
  • Writer: Rob Zombie
  • Key Cast: Sid Haig (as Captain Spaulding), Bill Moseley, Sheri Moon Zombie, Karen Black, Walton Goggins

8. Stitches (2012)

This Irish horror-comedy is a gory and hilarious hidden gem that everyone should run to watch.

A foul-mouthed party clown named Stitches dies in a humiliating accident during a children's party. Years later, he rises from the grave to exact bloody revenge on the now-teenagers who wronged him.

  • Director: Conor McMahon
  • Writers: Conor McMahon, David O'Brien
  • Key Cast: Ross Noble (as Stitches), Tommy Knight, Gemma-Leah Devereux, Shane Murray

9. The Houses October Built (2014)

This found-footage film taps into the real-world phenomenon of "extreme" haunted houses where the actors can touch you.

A group of friends travels the country in an RV, searching for the most intense and authentic haunt. They soon attract the attention of a group of haunt actors, including some deeply unsettling clowns, who begin to stalk them for real.

  • Director: Bobby Roe
  • Writers: Bobby Roe, Zack Andrews
  • Key Cast: Brandy Schaefer, Zack Andrews, Bobby Roe, Mikey Roe, Jeff Larson

10. All Hallows' Eve (2013)

Before Terrifier made him a star, Art the Clown made his feature-length debut in this anthology film.

It’s a lower-budget affair, but it establishes the pure, unmotivated evil that makes Art so frightening. This film is essential for understanding the origins of a modern horror icon.

  • Director: Damien Leone
  • Writer: Damien Leone
  • Key Cast: Katie Maguire, Catherine Callahan, Marie Maser, and Mike Giannelli (as Art the Clown)

Summing It All Up

I love how niche a clown horror movie is, and how it taps into childhood fears that can echo in many different ways as you get older.

These are the movies that jumped into my mind, but I bet you have your favorites.

Let me know what you think in the comments.
