Canon Rumors is reporting that the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6, along with several new RF lenses, will be announced on July 9th. The site has a long history of being both correct and widely wrong, but the Canon July 9th announcement checks out.

The confirmed features of the Canon EOS R5 aim to usher in a new wave of full-frame mirrorless image capture. When the EOS 5D Mark II was released in November 2008, it inadvertently changed independent filmmaking with the inclusion of full HD (1,920 x 1,080) video at 30fps. Now 12 years later, the EOS R5 looks to do the same. And it's probably not a coincidence the EOS R5 uses the "5" moniker. It's most likely a reference to the 5D SLR series.

So what's expected to be announced?

  • Canon EOS R5
  • Canon EOS R6
  • Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 IS STM
  • Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
  • Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM
  • Canon RF 100-500mm f/4-7.1L IS USM
  • Canon RF 600mm f/11 DO IS STM
  • Canon RF 800mm f/11 DO IS STM
  • Teleconverter RF 1.4x
  • Teleconverter RF 2x

That's a huge list of products: 2 new cameras, 6 lenses, and 2 teleconverters. Not much has been reported about the EOS R6, but it's safe to assume it will be a less expensive version of the EOS R5.

Speaking of price, multiple reports have the estimated price of the EOS R5 below $4,000, with speculation growing that it will be between $3,500 - $3,700. That would make it cheaper than the Sony a9 II which costs $4,498, and about the same price as the Panasonic LUMIX DC-S1H, which is slightly under $4K. I think that's where Canon is aiming to land. Full-frame 8K for under $4K.

In case you forgot, here are the confirmed EOS R5 features:

  • New Image Full-Frame Sensor and Processor
  • Internal 8K RAW, 4K 120p
  • 8K up to 29.97fps, 4K up to 119.9fps
  • 4:2:2 10-bit (H.265) Canon Log and RAW (most likely Canon RAW Light)
  • Uncropped 8K Internal RAW
  • Uncropped 4K Internal
  • HDR-PQ Recording
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF in 8K and 4K modes
  • 5-axis IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization)

The question now is when will it be made available. Canon Rumors is reporting the EOS R6 will ship in August and the EOS R5 will follow in September. So, what do you think about the upcoming Canon announcements? Let us know in the comments below.
