As we get deeper into the pandemic and people get more and more hungry for content, they are pouncing on whatever is new. And thus, we have a new champion atop the streaming empire.

And it's the king of Zamunda.

While originally supposed to be a major theatrical release, Paramount sold Coming 2 America to Amazon Prime, where it has now found landmark success.

"The Zamunda Royal family has arrived and audiences around the globe welcomed them enthusiastically!" said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, in a recent statement. "The premiere of Coming 2 America has far exceeded any of our wildest expectations."

In its first weekend on Amazon Prime, Eddie Murphy’s Coming 2 America became the most-watched streaming film since movie theaters closed due to COVID-19, according to Amazon and Screen Engine/ASI.

While they won't give out exact numbers, it passed Wonder Woman: 1984 and Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm to become another massive success. This impact greatly benefitted Amazon Prime, which became the top downloaded entertainment app on the App Store, and the #2 downloaded app across all free apps this last weekend.

Who knows how long this record will last?

March brings us the Snyder Cut as well as Godzilla vs. Kong, both premiering on Amazon rival HBO Max. It seems like these records will fluctuate back and forth until theaters can open again and the masses go there to watch. With so many people staying at home and embracing these platforms, the sooner the better on that front.

Streaming is beginning to become the norm, and while I think people will want to return to the movies for particular titles, they are getting very comfortable at home. Time will tell how this will pan out.
