We've seen a disturbing trend happening in Hollywood over the past few months and maybe even years. Movies and TV shows are made and then taken off platforms so that major companies can take a write-off.

These projects disappear. Unless you are lucky enough to have them on physical media, you cannot watch them again.

If you worked on them, then you can no longer show friends, family, or potential people who may hire you the hard work you put into each project once they are gone.

The reason companies do this is purely financial. Since they are trying to inflate their stocks, they're taking these projects as write-offs to take losses and find prosperity.

Disney has been at the forefront of this movement, wiping things off their platform if they decide they're not profitable.

Disney’s Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy talked on an earnings call about their strategy.

“We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC [direct-to-consumer] services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation,” McCarthy said. “As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion. The charge, which will not be recorded in our segment results will primarily be recognized in the third quarter as we complete our review and remove the content.”

One of the most glaring results of these cuts is the Mckenna Grace science fiction film, Crater. That movie was released on May 12th, 2023, then removed seven weeks after its release. It was only available to watch for 48 days and now may never be seen again.
