2020 was a year where we had a lot of time to watch movies...
This was a wild year for cinema. We had to spend most of it streaming at home, and the choices were all over the place. Well, JustWatch, an international streaming guide, compiled a list of what people were streaming the most this year.
Check it out.
While this just covers data collected in the United States, I think it's sort of sad and hilarious that We find Contagion ranking 4th. That feels like a very 2020 entry onto this list.
The rest of the list seems par for the course. Lots of well-reviewed movies from 2019 that people may have missed. They all were Academy Award or Spirit Award nominees that had a lot of buzz around them.
Did any of these titles surprise you?

Have to say I'm impressed with the public's general taste.

Totally! I'm really surprised. I thought most streamed movies would be
be films like 6 underground, Extraction, Holidate or something.
This could mean 2 things:
a) the public is interested into movies that are not just most simple Hollywood storytelling
b) The impact of an academy award on a movie is even bigger than I thought. Everybody wants to watch and Oscar nominee. It pays off to lobby for your movie to get an oscar nomination

I'm so surprised by this list that I'm suspicious of the underlying methodology and data...
