In a massive blast from the past, Prime Video has finally released the first look at Sophie Turner in the upcoming Tomb Raider series. Fans of the original 1996 PlayStation game are celebrating online as they see nostalgia come to life.

The first-look photo reveals the Game of Thrones actress pivoting her away from Westeros and leaning heavily into the game's aesthetic.

Check her out below.

When I was a kid, I loved playing Tomb Raider, and I definitely had a crush on the character, who came to life for me in the Angelina Jolie movies.

But as time has passed, we've seen different iterations of the character in both games and Alicia Vikander’s 2018 film.

Now, we're sort of back where we started, and I love it.

We have all the core designs from the original:

  • The Signature Palette: Turner is seen sporting the classic teal tank top and brown short shorts.
  • The Gear: The dual pistols are back, holstered at her thighs, along with the small leather backpack.
  • The Details: Most notably, the photo features the red-hued circular sunglasses—a direct nod to the original game’s inventory screen and cutscenes.
  • The Physique: Turner has reportedly undergone a rigorous training regimen, with sources noting she has been "training like an athlete" to match the acrobatic, powerhouse persona of the original Lara.

A "Dangerous" Vision from Phoebe Waller-Bridge

While the look is nostalgic, the creative force behind the show is Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, No Time To Die), who is one of the most inventive storytellers on the planet.

Waller-Bridge has promised a version of Lara that makes her teenage self happy. And I can see her perfectly balancing the character's wit with the high-octane adventure that made the franchise a global phenomenon.

“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode.,” Waller-Bridge said in a statement. “‘Tomb Raider’ has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.”

Summing It All Up

With filming now underway, we are likely looking at a late 2026 or early 2027 release date on Prime Video.

But I expect to get trailers and more set photos as we inch closer.

What do you think of Sophie's transformation? Is the return to the short shorts and dual pistols a win for nostalgia, or were you hoping for more of a reinvention?
