It's a day full of Nikon Z announcements, including the new NIKKOR 58mm f/0.95 Noct Z lens. The news for the Z camera line is the lightweight Z 50 DX-format mirrorless camera, released with the NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR lens and the NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR lens.

Nikon Z 50

While the Z 6 and Z 7 cameras feature a full-frame sensor, the new Z 50 camera has a DX-format 20.9 megapixel CMOS sensor. The Z 50 appears to borrow features from the Nikon D7500 and is designed with both portability and easy creation in mind. At just 14 ounces, the (very light) Z 50 is the first Z camera with a pop-up flash and also features a flip-down selfie screen, an ISO range of 100-51,200, and easy in-camera editing features such as video trimming and 20 Creative Picture controls. It can shoot 4K UHD video at 30fps, HD video at 120fps, and slo-mo video as well. While it does have a microphone jack, it does not have a headphone jack for monitoring sound.

The new lenses have optical VR (Vibration Reduction) built-in and when the Z 50 is paired with the new DX VR lenses, Dual Detect Optical VR is enabled on the camera to help correct for camera shake. The nicknamed "pancake zoom lens," the NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR features can retract into half of its size. The new NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR telephoto zoom is considered its companion lens. (Just a reminder that the DX sensor is a crop sensor and the crop factor is 1.5x.)

The Nikon Z 50 will be available in November 2019 for $859.95. It can be purchased with the NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR lens for $999.95 or with both new lenses, 16-50mm and 50-250mm, for $1349.95.
