Horror is one of the most reliable genres, and studios seem to have figured this out and released more horror movies than ever this year. That influx of horror made for some fun weekends at the theater.
Many buzzy films were released in 2024, and I tried to see most of them. However, regarding the horror genre, I felt like I had just scratched the surface.
Today, I want to review the 11 horror movies I saw in 224 that I consider the best. Since it's all subjective, don't consider this a ranking. It's more of a "to watch" list that I curated.
Let's dive into the list.
1. 'The Substance'
One the most audacious and exciting movies of the year. It's a body horror film written and directed by Coralie Fargeat. It stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid.
2. 'Longlegs'
Osgood Perkins horror thriller that blends elements of crime procedurals and occult horror for a bananas story with Maika Monroe and Nic Cage.
3. 'Late Night With the Devil'
This found-footage movie transports you back to the 70s for an epic creepy David Dastmalchian performance.
4. 'Heretic'
Beck and Woods take on the door-to-door missionaries who are taken in by Hugh Grant with some sinister motives and some big life questions.
5. 'Terrifier 3'
An all-time gross-out violent movie that sticks with the themes of the trilogy and expands on the practical effects we've seen.
6. 'The Coffee Table'
Though it was made in 2022 and did festivals in 2023, this movie came out this year and was....a lot to handle. Maybe too much.
7. 'The First Omen'
This was actually pretty fun. It takes the creepy kid vibes from the original and expands on them in a terrifying setting.
8. 'It's What's Inside'
Nothing scarier than a group of friends before a wedding. Lots of tension and existential dread. It turns quick in this Netflix movie.
9. 'Strange Darling'
A one-night stand turns into a murderous rampage as Kyle Gallner delivers one of the most memorable performances to date.
10. 'In a Violent Nature'
There's something perfect about a movie set in the wilderness with an undead monster roving around. It feels classic, and it is so exciting and tight.
11. 'Nosferatu'
I caught a sneak preview in LA, don't sue me, Focus, but I thought it was awesome. I am a huge Robert Eggers fan and cannot wait for more people to see this movie.
From demonic talk show hosts and killer coffee tables to body horror transformations and occult mysteries, 2024 horror movies delivered tenfold. They not only left me excited for what 2025 has in store but also to check out more movies from these filmmakers.
Did you see all these movies? Did I miss any of your favorites?
