With NAB just over a month away, the camera and tech market for the film and video industry is starting to heat up. The latter of which is getting the party started early with the announcement of a new Lumix S1R II mirrorless camera. A follow-up to the company’s popular Lumix S1R, this updated version is set to bring even greater performance and specs for both photo and video.
With a 44.3MP full-frame sensor capable of 8K 10-bit video recording, it’s going to turn some heads too. Let’s explore everything you need to know about this exciting new camera from Panasonic.
The Panasonic Lumix S1R II Mirrorless Camera
Designed to bring together a trifecta of great image quality, high-speed performance, and cutting-edge video tools, the new Panasonic Lumix S1R II is going to be a full-frame powerhouse mirrorless camera designed for working photographers and all manner of hybrid content creators.
The Lumix S1R II will feature a newly developed 44.3MP full-frame sensor, a 779-point Phase Hybrid AF system, and 8K 10-bit video recording, all great next-generation specs and features that aim to build upon the success of its predecessor while also introducing faster performance, improved autofocus, and enhanced video capabilities.
Along with this newly developed 44.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor that’s meant to offer a balanced approach to high resolution, speed, and low-light performance, the Lumix S1R II will also introduce improved processing with the L2 Engine that should further expand its shooting and dynamic range.
8K 30p and 4K 120p 10-Bit Video
For filmmakers, videographers, and any other content creator pros out there, the video specs are quite impressive too. The Lumix S1R II is set to truly bring cinema-quality video capabilities to Panasonic’s Lumix lineup for the first time.
The Lumix S1R II will feature 8K resolution, advanced color science, and RAW recording. All cinema-level features should overall help the camera deliver exceptional detail, dynamic range, and post-production flexibility at levels you don’t often see with hybrid cameras.
Panasonic shares that the Lumix S1R II has been designed for those working on documentaries, commercials, high-frame-rate action sequences, or other cinematic productions, as the Lumix S1R II will be able to provide the right tools for those looking to craft these types of visual projects.
The Lumix S1R II will also feature some other quite impressive video recording specs, including:
- 8K 30p 10-bit recording for ultra-high-definition filmmaking
- 6.4K open-gate video for flexible cropping and reframing
- 4K 120p slow-motion capture for high-frame-rate cinematography
- ProRes RAW HQ internal recording, along with external RAW support
- 14 stops of dynamic range and advanced color grading tools
- 32-bit float audio via optional DMW-XLR2 adapter
- Waveforms and vector scopes for exposure and color monitoring
- Real-time LUTs and False Color for on-set color grading
- Flexible codecs and recording formats, including ProRes, H.265, and All-I
