To many folks of a certain age and the boomer generation, Sean Connery will always be the first person they think of when they think of James Bond as portrayed in film. However, for those born in one particular era of Bond films, Pierce Brosnan has a strong case to be the second most iconic Bond actor thanks to his series-reviving portrayals in GoldenEye and three follow-ups.

Yet, before he donned the suit and style, Brosnan took his turn starring and supporting in several different films and in various roles. Taffin, a 1988 thriller, was never a big hit and was largely irrelevant outside of the UK, yet it did give us a rugged, if not disheveled, look that could be viewed as a proto-Bond performance—albeit through a very muddied lens.

It also gave us one of the most odd, iconic, and quotable breakup lines in film history. Which, if you haven’t seen it, we’re happy to share with you today.

Pierce Brosnan as Taffin

Portraying the film’s lead, of which he shares a name, Pierce Brosnan plays Mark Taffin in Taffin, a debt collector in the small town of Ballymoran who has a reputation for being able to craftily use his street smarts and martial arts skills to make sure his debts are always collected.

Not your usual action hero, and quite a far way removed from the crisp and clean demeanor of James Bond (or at least of Bond performances up to that time, including Brosnan’s own run, which would begin eight years later), Taffin does have some likable qualities—at least to the women in his town.

After helping a local barmaid named Charlotte (Alison Doody, who was actually a former Bond girl herself, having played Jenny Flex in A View to a Kill opposite Roger Moore in his final Bond performance just a few years earlier), she becomes Taffin’s girlfriend. That is, until she isn’t.

“Maybe You Shouldn’t Be Living Here!”

Not a romance film in a classical sense, Taffin is a thriller about justice and relationships. And, despite Taffin’s own battles with townspeople and himself, he does end up giving one of the more odd, yet certainly memorable, breakup-esque scenes in film history, where he delivers this iconic yelling line.

“Maybe you shouldn’t be living here!”

“Well, that’s easily fixed,” Charlotte replies as she leaves Taffin. Eventually, they do reconcile, and without spoilers, there is an ending that offers a bit of closure for the duo's tumultuous relationship.

Lessons and Takeaways

If you haven’t seen Taffin and are any level of a James Bond fan, the film is certainly an interesting look into the casting decision of Pierce Brosnan as Bond less than a decade later.

It’s also a solid thriller-action flick that delivers some fun fights and crosses along the way, and a worthy film to view for aspiring action filmmakers and actors alike.
