Today saw the announcement of Sony's new powerhouse cinema camera, VENICE 2. And we're all very excited to see what this camera can do.
So it's great that award-winning cinematographer Robert McLachlan, who has worked on highly acclaimed productions including Game of Thrones (for which he received two Emmy nominations), Westworld, and Lovecraft Country, tested and filmed with the new 8.6K full-frame camera in two countries.

McLachlan offered his thoughts afterward.
"I really wish we'd had a large format, 8.6K sensor like Sony VENICE 2 on my past work. It would have made it feel even more epic and, at the same time, more engaging, thanks to the increased resolution, richness, and dimensionality. The increased speed, cleaner highlights, and shadows together with the potential for super-shallow depth of field would have been a huge asset."
VENICE 2's dynamic versatility is a strong suit that will allow cinematographers to thrive.

Workflow
You would think that more resolution would result in bigger files, which leads to longer data transfer time. But, that isn't the case with VENICE 2.
The DIT on this shoot, Tim Nagasawa, shared his thoughts after practical use with the camera.
"Yes, 8K RAW files are very large and can be an intimidating hurdle to approach but because of Sony's full support of Hardware and Software along with the many complimentary 3rd party companies Sony is working with makes media management on set very stable and efficient... I was able to walk away from each shooting day within 20 minutes of wrap completely certain all the day's footage was downloaded, backed up, and verified."
Sony understands that data transferring takes a large amount of time and can cause problems on set. They combatted this while adding even more resolution to the image.

Results
VENICE 2 was put in multiple real-world situations to get accurate results, and proved that Sony has created one of the most powerful cinema cameras in the market.
