Without seeing the new West Side Story, it's hard to compare it to the classic. But I cannot help but be overwhelmed by excitement for the new Steven Spielberg version. Though it is probably unfair, I found this side-by-side comparison with the original online.

Right away, I think you can see the difference in the way each director uses light. I would think that's mostly because the original version was shot mostly on sets and with colorful, dramatic lighting. 

Spielberg seems like he's been shooting on location in New York a lot, utilizing natural light. We have seen some color manipulation, though nothing as pronounced as the original. 

Both movies contain sweeping camerawork and creative angles.

Again, we are just looking at trailers, so there's not much else to glean, but that's what stood out to me.
