Nerd Out with a Side-by-Side 'West Side Story' Comparison

I am so ready for the new West Side Story. Are you?

Without seeing the new West Side Story, it's hard to compare it to the classic. But I cannot help but be overwhelmed by excitement for the new Steven Spielberg version. Though it is probably unfair, I found this side-by-side comparison with the original online.

Check it out, and let's talk after.

Right away, I think you can see the difference in the way each director uses light. I would think that's mostly because the original version was shot mostly on sets and with colorful, dramatic lighting.

Spielberg seems like he's been shooting on location in New York a lot, utilizing natural light. We have seen some color manipulation, though nothing as pronounced as the original.

Both movies contain sweeping camerawork and creative angles.

Again, we are just looking at trailers, so there's not much else to glean, but that's what stood out to me.

What stood out to you? Let me know in the comments.

We did this play for my 10th grade year in High School. I played Doc and learned how to do a Yiddish accent poorly and also worked tech crew for the first time. Amazing story and this remake looks decent. Those shadows mixing for the rumble gets me excited!
