Meet CAME-TV's New Super Portable Boltzen Fresnel LEDs

These 30 and 55-watt models are ideal for the filmmaker on the go.

Fresnel lenses give filmmakers great control over the focus of light and can help add throw distance to a unit while keeping weight down. The new CAME-TV Boltzen Fresnel LEDs take that standard and mold it into a sleek, compact design. While the cans may produce a nice soft light, they're still able to put out a decent amount of power.

The fresnel lens allows them to push light further out, so instead of buying one big light, you can set these lights pretty far away and you’ll still get a high level of intensity. It all proves that you don’t need a powerful light to illuminate out very far if you have the right lens.

CAME-TV Boltzen 30w Fresnel LED

Perhaps most useful about this video light is the fact it includes an adjustable fresnel lens to help focus the light and provide a longer throw. When used without the lens, the light becomes a wider flood, and the included barn doors help control the spill. This versatility allows you to go from a tight spot to a wide flood all in one continuous light.

Digital Read-Out

There are two new models of CAME-TV's new Fresnel LED: 30-watt and 55-watt. The front of the light is all metal, while its back is made up of plastic. There is no fan on the 30-watt model, while the 55-watt has a fan that’s barely audible. It features knobs for powering on and dimming, as well as a digital display at the very back. These are only daylight lights, so they don’t switch colors. However, you can add optional filters, as the package comes with three different filters, including a tungsten.

Three filter options.

This 30-watt is truly one of the smallest fresnel LED’s at this wattage. At about the same size as the Canon 70-200 lens, it's very portable, so you could store a bunch of them in a relatively small bag. Check out the video below for a demonstration of the light's power:

I'll never understand how they can post a video or text on a light without stating the lumens and cri. At least they had the cri. 96, not bad.

I just can't do anything Came-tv anymore. They have absolutely zero customer service, no way to get help on any of their products. Well, I guess you can send the item back to them (to China, which you pay for) so they can look at it, possibly fix it, and send it back (from China, which you also pay for). There is no way to talk to anyone on the phone or through email for any questions. Awful company.

I just grabbed the 55. You're all right. CAME TV has no customer service, but for this price, this looks like a great first fresnel for someone like myself who is trying to learn more about lighting.

CAME-TV does publish the lumen spec for their Boltzen Fresnel lights, but it doesn't specify the measuring distance or the beam-angle : https://goo.gl/snvpTe

MrCheesyCam did his own test with these versus the Aputure Lightstorm 120t (mostly - it's not totally scientific, but he recognizes that) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RR_d90Rgrq8

Yeah, it was an interesting test that CheeszyCam did. It definitely looks like the Boltzen fresnels are bright when they are narrow focused.

Thanks for the review, it could be a useful piece of kit. I see the comments about lumens, CRI etc. Hard for us to judge the power of the light. May I suggest telling us what the stop is at 6' at a given IS0 and exposure, say something like ISO 640 and 50th sec? It would be useful to know what you the camera settings for the review - same thing, iso, exposure and stop. Thanks!

I’ve been looking at these myself, they seem like a good value for the money and very powerful. Here is a link to additional info I’ve found about them:

3-Point Interview Setup with Boltzen Lights (Smallest LED Fresnel) by Tom Antos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJT8qETZ-4M

He mentions it’s bright enough to use at ISO 400 but gives no distance or aperture info.

He also mentions issues when using large heavy soft boxes. However, I think this will be a solution for that problem:
