Tokina has announced a new series of full frame lenses for DSLR cameras called the Opera series. The 50mm F1.4 is first to be on the shelf with Tokina positioning the line as a "next-gen," "premium" option for filmmakers and photographers. The lens will be available in Canon EF or Nikon F mounts.

The 50mm F1.4 features a ring-shaped ultrasonic motor for fast autofocusing, weather sealing to keep moisture and dust reaching inside the body and Tokina claims there will be no vignetting on full-frame sensors. The Opera line will also take advantage of the electronic aperture mechanism on the Nikon mount, a first for Tokina. Additionally, the focus ring rotation will match the same direction as Canon and Nikon lenses.

Based on what we know and the industry trending towards full-frame workflows, we wouldn't be surprised if Tokina pushed the optics to perform similarly to its Cinema Vista Primes, but we won't know for certain until we get our hands on them. It's most likely "wishful thinking" and the Opera series aligns more with something like Sigma's Art lenses.

The expected release date is this summer, but pricing and availability have yet to be announced.
