Billed as the first awards ceremony of the season, the IFP Gotham Awards today announced its nominees for the 28th edition, to be held on Monday, November 27th at Cipiriani Wall Street in New York City. A strong prognosticator of how the Academy Awards will play out—previous Best Feature winners have included Birdman (or, The Unexpected Virtue of Innocence), Spotlight, and Moonlight, the awards ceremony, organized and presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project, is streamed live on the organization's Facebook page and is a relaxed, boozy event that's less about sought-after ratings and more about honoring the year's best work. 

In addition to three previously announced tributes that will be feted upon Willem Dafoe (At Eternity's Gate), Paul Greengrass (22 July), and Rachel Weisz (The Favourite), the jury—made up of teams of film critics and journalists invited by IFP's Senior Director of Programming Milton Tabbot—chose to award the three women who make up the sardonically funny The Favourite (Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz) with a Special Jury Award. After previous news stories reported that Stone and Weisz would be campaigned and competing in the Supporting categories at the Screen Actors Guild Awards (with Colman going Lead), it's nice to see all three women equally honored for their three (truly) lead performances.

“There has been a rich abundance of great films, television, and performances in 2018, and we congratulate those being recognized in the nominations this year,” said Joana Vicente, Executive Director of IFP and the Made in NY Media Center.
