You know those weird couples who nerd out on action movies together? They’d rather watch a bloody John McClane beat up goons than watch two people fessing up their love, holding hands? That was my parents.

Unlike normal couples, their date nights were reserved for action movies. It was only after I was born that those dates shifted from the theater to our own home; Dad bought a VCR instead of theater tickets. Obviously, I was too young to remember anything more than flashes of it, but Mom tells me that we’d snuggle up on the couch and have weekend movie marathons.

So basically, it’s a miracle that my first words weren’t “yippie-ki-yay!” While those movie nights stopped being a ritual after I got too busy growing up, those movies have stayed with me.

So here’s a list of the greatest ‘90s action flicks that were the real deal of the decade—they don’t make them like this anymore!

Greatest ‘90s Action Films

1. The Matrix (1999)

The Wachowskis’ sci-fi masterpiece, The Matrix, remains a milestone in world-building and features action sequences unlike anything seen before, with the bullet-time effect among the first of its kind.

The narrative follows a young man, Neo (Keanu Reeves), who discovers that our reality is nothing but a computer simulation. He then has to decide between living in a perpetual state of oblivion and joining the fight against the artificial intelligence controlling mankind.

2. Heat (1995)

You know those movies that are basically flawless? Michael Mann’s Heat is one such movie. A slow-burning cat-and-mouse thriller between a detective and a heist mastermind, Heat features some of the most iconic action sequences that you will ever see in your life. That’s not an opinion—I’m betting on it.

3. Léon: The Professional (1994)

If Léon, the “cleaner,” is after you, death has begun its countdown on your life. A sleek assassin with a knack for killing, Léon adopts a 12-year-old Mathilda as his protege, training her in his ways so that she can exact revenge on the corrupt DEA agents who murdered her entire family.

Every fight is intelligent, and all the action choreography is hot out of the oven in this one! And Natalie Portman as a 12-year-old avenger? Iconic!

4. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Arnold Schwarzenegger promised he would be back, but it took him just a few years to return to the screen as the Terminator in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, after The Terminator was released in 1984.

This time, it is machine versus machine. This time, Schwarzenegger's T-800 returns as a protector rather than an assassin, sent to defend young John Connor from the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), a more advanced liquid-metal Terminator. The movie not only features high-tech brute action but also one of the most iconic chases in movie history.

5. GoldenEye (1995)

Martin Campbell’s James Bond movie follows Bond as he tries to stop a Russian crime syndicate from using a powerful defense system that was stolen from the government.

Campbell revolutionized Bond action, blending high-risk practical stunts with innovative digital effects to feature iconic sequences such as the tank chase in St. Petersburg and the opening dam jump.

6. Speed (1994)

Another iconic Keanu Reeves-starrer! This time, our angel-haired boy is trying to prevent an LA city bus from exploding in the heart of the city. But he cannot apply the brakes, as the bomb is rigged to the accelerator. If the speed drops below 50 miles per hour, the bus explodes.

Director Jan de Bont uses urban environments, such as freeways and bus interiors, to heighten the claustrophobic tension and sense of danger. The action relies heavily on real stunts and technical thrills, using minimal CGI to heighten realism.

7. True Romance (1993)

Tony Scott’s True Romance features one of the most iconic gunfights in movie history. Written by Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avery, the narrative follows a hippie couple on the run as they try to get away with stealing drugs from mobsters, who are hot on their heels.

The action is gripping, the romance is passionate, and the dark humor is off the charts!

8. Point Break (1991)

Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break follows an FBI agent who goes undercover to infiltrate a gang of surfers who are prime suspects in a bank robbery. With Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves in lead roles, Point Break combines character-driven drama with extreme sports and realistic stunts, featuring iconic action sequences that are sure to blow your mind.

9. Mission: Impossible (1996)

Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt will always remain the quintessential American agent who’s both wondrous and real. Don’t worry, because Ethan will always figure it out!

Brian de Palma’s Mission: Impossible threw the audience into a whirlwind of thrill, mystery, relentless chases, and punchy humor. The movie grew into a major franchise over the years, with Cruise surpassing our expectations with stunt sequences that one-upped the last!

10. La Femme Nikita (1990)

Luc Besson’s La Femme Nikita follows a convicted felon who gets a second chance at life through a government program that trains her into a lethal weapon under a sadistic mentor to do the government’s dirty work.

Nikita is iconic as a female assassin and flawless at her job, until she falls in love with a simpleton and is forced to choose between love and her contract with the government. La Femme Nikita checks all the boxes of a classic ‘90s action movie while presenting an emotionally resonant narrative.

11. Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)

While the second film in the franchise, Die Hard 2, was a dip, John McTiernan revived the Die Hard franchise with Die Hard with a Vengeance. Our very own John McClane is in NYC trying to track down a terrorist who has held the entire city hostage. He is assisted by Zeus Carver as the two comb through Manhattan seeking a series of explosive devices that have been planted all over the city.

The movie features dramatic gunfights, iconic hand-to-hand combat, dynamic chases, and treacherous outdoor action, culminating in a final sequence in which McClane shoots down an entire helicopter, blowing it up in flames through sheer quick wit, making the movie a close rival to the original.

12. Demolition Man (1993)

Marco Brambilla’s Demolition Man stars Sylvester Stallone as detective John Spartan, who is woken up from his cryogenic sleep when Simon Phoenix, a felon, begins to wreak havoc in the futuristic utopian city of San Angeles.

Unable to stop him using peaceful methods, Spartan is tasked with capturing him by any means possible. The movie is widely acclaimed for blending futuristic concepts with classic, high-octane action, featuring iconic hand-to-hand combat, intense gunfights, and spectacular stunts, including a helicopter-bungee jump in its opening.
