Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K Can Now Record to the URSA Mini Recorder

When it comes to capturing high-resolution video, storage is your friend.

Blackmagic has released Camera Setup 7.2, a new firmware update that improves the URSA Mini Pro 12K, URSA viewfinders, and adds new features to RAW 2.0 Beta 4.

The highlight of the software release is the URSA Mini Pro 12K gaining the ability to record video to the URSA Mini Recorder.

The Mini Recorder is a high-capacity SSD recorder that allows longer record times. It supports 2.5" SSDs including U.2 NVMe disks. Adding it to the camera is easy, as it is attached between the back of the camera and the battery and is controlled by USB-C.

This is a welcome addition, since recording 12K or even 4K can start chewing into your storage quickly. SSDs are a great alternative to recording media as they provide plenty of storage without costing as much as higher-capacity CFexpress cards.

The update also improves the Gen 5 color science in both the URSA Viewfinder and URSA Studio Viewfinder so colors will be more accurate when viewing the images.

Having used the URSA Mini Recorder on an original URSA Mini Pro, I would think that the advantages of this system with the 12K would be a no brainer. I really don't see how you could get the most out of the 12k without recording to a drive. The lower expense, longer record times, and camera integration just makes sense...

That said, the one bit I would caution people about is that the recorder uses one of the SDI outs on the back of the camera. So if you are using the other SDI port for a viewfinder or on-camera monitor there aren't any other SDI ports to run a client monitor. We would sometimes split the viewfinder signal, but that had some problems too. Depending on your monitor config this may not be an issue, but it was occasionally an annoyance for us hard-wire folks. I loop-through on-camera monitor might be the way to go.
