Canon announced its latest cinema camera today, the EOS C70. It's a fresh take on a dedicated video camera that blends Canon mirrorless features (RF amount, auto ISO, smarter autofocus tracking, smaller form factor) with familiar pro-level features (built-in ND filter, mini XLR inputs, timecode, longer-lasting battery) into one gimbal-friendly 4K DCI-capable camera.

No Film School couldn't get our hands on a pre-production model from Canon USA, but thankfully, others in the community have and started posting impressions, reviews, and footage online. Reactions about the release range from being critical to excited, and some, are downright funny.

Footage

As you might expect, Canon has released some official footage with the camera, including the short Give This Heart A Pen by DP Jolade Olusanya, along with a BTS companion. It's a portrait of London-based poet, performer, and author Sophia Thakur. The Olusanya paired the C70 with RF and EF lenses as well as the EF-EOS R 0.71x adapter.

What's nice about the video is it shows how the camera renders color, darker skin tones, and gives you a peek into its dynamic range with several shots of the sky. Check it out below:

Park Cameras also released some footage of the C70 as well. It's not a lot, but you can see how well the sensor handles shadow and highlights before he goes into some of his initial thoughts.

Reviews

Greece-based shooter Giannis Saroukos got his hands on the C70 for 10 days to shoot some tests and provide insight. Just be sure to click the closed caption button if you don't speak his native language.

Our affiliate partner Adorama had time to go through the C70 as well. It's more of a feature overview but if you'd rather watch and listen to know about the camera instead of reading, here you go.

OrmsTV released a first impressions video that goes over some of the stronger points of the C70 including its 4K 4:2:2 10-bit at 120p. Check it out.
