Dan Harmon and Michael Waldron Had an Amazing Plan for the "Lego Batman" Sequel
If you were hoping for a sequel to the immensely well-crafted The LEGO Batman movie, we have some sad news for you.
These LEGO movies are really something to marvel at. It feels like they shouldn't work, but they do!
The first LEGO film was originally produced by Warner Bros., though last year Universal decided to exclusively take back the rights to the majority of the LEGO-verse's characters and IPs. Meaning Warner Bros. no longer has the creative freedom to make sequels and expand upon the franchise with these iconic characters.

In an interview with Collider, franchise director Chris McKay elaborated on the situation and their future plans:
"Dan (Harmon) and (Michael) Waldron had done a first draft of the script that was really great. It was truly epic... both from an action standpoint and from a story standpoint. The structure was Godfather Part 2... a story about Batman’s relationship to the Justice League (and Superman) now as well as the formative moments of the Justice League (and Batman’s relationship with Superman) then."
Wow! Does that not sound like an awesome direction for that franchise?
It feels like they had such a unique grand plan that would have impressed audiences and fans all around. With a dream team behind it, who wouldn't greenlight this project?
Apparently, the studios weren't too thrilled about the team taking the Batman character more seriously.
Mckay continued, "The studio was leery of LEGO Batman being an actual Batman movie so I was constantly told to hold back. Audiences (and subsequent movies like Into the Spider-Verse) proved them wrong."

We've seen studios be scared off of projects because of this before, but oddly enough, whenever a studio does decide to take the gamble, it's usually worth it.
So at the end of the day, it is indeed sad news. But we're still left with a small amount of hope that maybe one day we'll see this awesome vision come to fruition.
