In Tom and Jerry, Tom spends all his time trying to catch Jerry, but despite multiple near-catches, he rarely succeeds.

Why do you think that is? I have a theory—Jerry gives Tom purpose, and so, while they might be on opposite sides, they complete each other. Tom doesn’t really want him gone from the house, or worse, dead.

I can go on and on about such rival duos, because God knows, the instances are endless.

So, that’s what I'll do. Here is a list of the most iconic rivalries of all time.

10 Most Memorable Rival Duos of All Time

1. Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty

Both literature and cinema feature one of the most iconic rival duos: Holmes and Moriarty, two brilliant, analytical minds who are two sides of the same coin.

Both harbor similar ideologies, qualities, and ambitions; however, it’s their approach to enforcing them that distinguishes them.

2. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker—Star Wars

Obi-Wan Kenobi was Anakin Skywalker’s mentor, who taught him the ways of the Jedi while nurturing his talents. But, eventually, Anakin, increasingly influenced by the Dark Side, turns against the Jedi and Obi-Wan.

The first climactic duel between Anakin Skywalker and Obi‑Wan Kenobi takes place in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. In the battle of Mustafar, when Padmé tries to stop Anakin from falling to the dark side, Obi-Wan emerges from her ship. Thinking that she has betrayed him, Anakin tries to kill her in rage. Obi-Wan immediately intervenes, which leads to an iconic duel between the master and the apprentice.

3. Woody and Buzz Lightyear—Toy Story

Those who have siblings, mention the “Woody” to your “Buzz” in the comments!

The dynamics between Andy and his two favorite toys are very familial. Andy is their parent, and the two constantly try to outdo each other just to become his favorite kid. Woody, being the “elder” sibling here (considering he was there much before Buzz), is extremely jealous of Buzz and scared to lose his place in Andy’s heart and in the household of toys, now that Buzz is here and seems to have swayed Andy.

Their rivalry eventually turns into a bittersweet friendship, but it never loses the stink of healthy competition. To me, that’s the highlight of their relationship.

4. Maverick and Iceman—Top Gun

If you want to excel in your profession, having a rival like Tom “Iceman” Kazansky is a boon.

Maverick is talented but not quite in control of his impulsiveness while flying his fighter plane. He is a rule-breaking, instinct-driven pilot whose brilliance is matched by Iceman’s discipline, precision, and cool professionalism, something that the Navy prefers over Maverick’s bravado.

The Top Gun Academy teaches Maverick to fly, while Iceman’s rivalry teaches him the importance of teamwork over ego. Over time, their jealousy and hatred for each other evolve into a bond of camaraderie, marked by respect, healthy competition, mentorship, and shared experiences.

5. Mufasa and Scar—The Lion King

Sibling rivalry is one of the most common forms of rivalry, but Scar took it too far. Resentful for not being crowned as the king of the Pride Lands, he believes that he was unjustly removed from the position of power that he was meant to have.

So, in an attempt to usurp the throne, he kills his brother in cold blood. However, the rivalry doesn't die with Mufasa’s death. Rather, it lives on through Simba, who returns to Pride Rock to claim the throne as the rightful heir.

6. Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy—Harry Potter

Both were intelligent wizards who could definitely be friends, but instead shared a relationship of brutal rivalry as they were pitted against each other by their respective families from birth.

The Potters and Malfoys have contrasting ideals: the former are distinguished by their bravery, while the latter are known for their wealth and elitism. In their desperate attempts to uphold their respective family legacies, the two boys become lifelong rivals, further fueled by their social divisions and allegiances.

7. Alfred Borden and Robert Angier—The Prestige

Two extremely ambitious magicians who are chasing absolute perfection in their craft, Alfred and Robert's rivalry in The Prestige is driven by jealousy, revenge, and an unyielding desire to outdo one another.

Once upon a time, they were friends, but they fell out after Angier’s wife died in a tragic accident during a water tank escape that Borden performed. Angier blames Borden for his wife’s death, and as they part ways, they swear to surpass each other in magic.

Both magicians are distinctive in their magic and outlook toward their craft—Borden is a traditional magician, who prioritizes magic over his own well-being, going to extensive lengths to keep the secrets of his craft hidden, while Angier is a charismatic showman who pursues grandeur and spectacle. Their rivalry is one of the finest examples of duality in our world.

8. Torrance and Isis—Bring It On

A gusto marks the rivalry between these two cheerleaders, who each want to prove themselves as the best. Torrance and Isis are the leaders of two competing cheerleading groups, the Toros and Clovers, battling it out for the title at the National Cheerleading Championship.

Torrance is the newly appointed captain of the Toros, who’s determined to bring home the sixth consecutive title for her squad, when she learns that her predecessor has been directly plagiarizing the routines choreographed by the Clovers.

The two drive each other to become the best versions of themselves while quietly inspiring one another through their achievements, resilience, and dedication to their craft.

9. Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha—Naruto

Naruto and Sasuke are the yin to each other’s yang. Both burdened by their traumatic childhood, these two orphans grew up competing with each other from day one, fuelled by their ideological differences and quest for power.

Naruto is the knuckle-headed, unpredictable ninja with the power of the Nine-Tails, while Sasuke is the naturally talented and introverted Uchiha prodigy. Their rivalry becomes the catalyst for their individual growth, driving both to new limits.

Despite their petty yet extremely effective sense of competition, Naruto and Sasuke are like brothers who’ll express that they care about each other only through the ways they try to outdo each other. Think of it as a mark of respect amidst a pool of healthy jealousy and eye-rolls at each other’s choices in life.

10. Vincent Hanna and Neil McCauley—Heat

When it comes to being rivals, Vincent and McCauley are each other’s mirrors. The diner scene in Heat proves that they're practically the same person, but with a few minor differences. In another universe, they’d be best friends, but in this one, their profession fuels an intense rivalry marked by respect instead of malice.

In the end, McCauley dies at Vincent's hands, strangely completing the circle of life.
