“If He Dies, He Dies": The Most Cold-Blooded Line in the ‘Rocky’ Franchise
A line that blurs the line between competition and kill.

'Rocky IV' (1985)
The Rocky franchise began as a tale of an underdog champion, but over the years, it has brought many other aspects of the human psyche into perspective.
While every Rocky movie inspires us to believe in hard work and perseverance, they also remind us of the brutality and coldness around us.
On that note, the one scene that definitely deserves a mention is from Rocky IV—Apollo Creed’s (Carl Weathers) death in the ring at the hands of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), the Russian fighter.
In this article, let’s analyze Drago’s speech to the media after the fight, as Creed lies lifeless in Rocky’s arms.
To Give You Some Context…
The fourth film in the Rocky franchise, Rocky IV, follows Rocky in his quest to avenge the death of Apollo Creed, who dies at the hands of the Russian champion boxer, Ivan Drago, in the ring.
Rocky IV distinguishes itself within the franchise through its emotionally resonant yet methodical treatment of revenge. Rocky’s revenge isn’t simply eye-for-an-eye; it’s much more.
He doesn’t want to kill Drago; rather, Rocky wants to defeat him fair and square in a bout of boxing, to complete what was started by Creed.
The Scene
Drago’s arrival in the U.S. has become noisier by the day, with his manager promoting his power as a hallmark of Soviet superiority.
Triggered by such claims, Creed decides to throw an open challenge to Drago for an exhibition bout. Creed then goes to Rocky to ask for help in training. Despite his apprehensions, Rocky agrees to train him.
Meanwhile, the hostility between the two contending boxers only increases.
The match is being held at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Both contenders are brimming with confidence; however, Drago shows a menacing cool, which foreshadows a bad omen.
The bout begins. Creed is alert and tries to start with offense. However, his punches land ineffectively on Drago. Before Creed can realize, Drago begins to pummel him with consecutive punches.
Outside the ring, Creed’s wife, Rocky, and Duke, Apollo’s corner man, beg him to throw in the towel to stop the fight, but Apollo doesn’t budge. Rocky himself anxiously waits for Creed to give him a sign for the towel, but when Creed insists on going on, Rocky respects his wishes.
Moments later, Drago delivers repeated devastating blows before a final punch kills Creed.
His still body on the ring immediately throws the crowd, the media, and the judges into a complete frenzy. Rocky rushes to Creed and takes him in his arms, desperately yelling for a doctor and some help, while Creed’s wife tries to make her way through the crowd and media in vain and despair.
Right next to them stands Drago, completely unbothered that he killed a man, addressing the media and the audience about his win.
He says, “I cannot be defeated. I beat all men. Someday, I will beat a real champion. If he dies, he dies."
Analyzing the Burden of Drago’s Winning Words
Yes, power and strength matter, but the true essence of boxing isn’t in the display of brute power. These bouts are meant to demonstrate strategy, perseverance, and discipline.

As a fighter, you’ll be stronger than most around you, but without compassion and empathy, you’re just an untamed beast.
Drago’s lines during Creed’s last moments prove that he is beastly, both physically and mentally. For him, boxing isn’t a sport, but the ring is a hunting ground, where he obliterates anybody who dares to challenge him.
His words echo with mockery as he calls Creed “a great champion,” and then shows absolutely no remorse upon his tragic death.
While competition is the most natural thing in any sport between rivals, Drago’s words expose a perilous side to mankind, which is often triggered by a wounded ego. It shows us how life loses its value in the face of power.
Undeniably, this scene is one of the most spine-chilling moments in the entire Rocky franchise.
