Billie Eilish is kicking off her tour on the big screen in what could be a massive move for both theaters and for her co-director...James Cameron.

The Grammy and Oscar-winning pop star announced on Sunday that she is releasing a concert film named after her latest album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, with James Cameron.

The film is set for a theatrical release via Paramount Pictures on March 20th, 2026, and will be screened in 3D.

Let's dig more into this collaboration.

The Cameron Effect

James Cameron is not a name you usually associate with concert docs, but it instantly made me interested in what Eilish is cooking up.

The director is currently deep in Pandora on the Avatar sequels, but his involvement in this project signals that it's aiming for a level of technical immersion and visuals that we have not seen before.

It could also mark the future of concert movies in general.

We need ways to get audiences to theaters, and we saw with the Eras Tour and Taylor Swift that this is a great way to get butts in seats and keep movie theaters open. This could be great for the industry and could help bring other projects like this one to the big screen.

Cameron has long been the industry's loudest evangelist for 3D technology. While the format has seen its ups and downs in popularity among general audiences, Cameron has never wavered in his belief that 3D is the superior way to experience cinema.

And I will say his Avatar movies are the only ones I have seen use 3D in interesting ways that don't make me sick or upset.

We don't know what 3D camera Cameron is shooting on or any of his other techniques, but I am excited to see how this all unpacks moving forward.

Summing It Up

We often talk about what it takes to get people into movie theaters in the streaming age, and the answer is always "specarcle."

Well, I can't think of anyone who understands that more than James Cameron. And him teaming up with one of the biggest pop stars out there is huge.

And these kinds of concerts might be a way to keep the theatrical business alive and add some income to theater chains along the way.

Hit Me Hard and Soft hits theaters on March 20th, 2026.
