This year has had its ups and downs. So much so, at times you just want veg out on animal videos or get lost in TikTok before you realize it's 3 a.m., and that bowl of cereal you left out on the counter is no longer good. The No Film School equivalent to that is watching people geek out over their favorite gear.
Recently, Jason Momoa (of Aquaman fame) was given an all-brass edition of RED's Komodo 6K camera. Since he's arguably one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, it makes it that much more enjoyable to watch him nerd out over the specially designed edition.
RED has always created an allure through its marketing. The white Stormtrooper camera bodies are probably the most well known, but directors like Michael Bay and the Xenomorph camera for David Fincher's Mindhunterhave also seen custom one-offs. With Komodo, RED took that one step further and offered early adopters custom colors of the camera—orange, blue, white.
Momoa's brass version is pretty unique and matches well with his Leica glass. The actor even directed a short with the Komodo that turned out pretty good, too.
The collaboration seems to be working, as RED has actually halted sales of Komodo on its website. Jarred Land of RED said in an Instagram post to not panic.
"Both our factories in Irvine and Mexico are pumping out cameras in record numbers and will continue to be shipped to dealers every day," Land said, "so if you need a Komodo before Xmas hit up your favorite dealer to see if they have any or are getting any."
It's uncertain when Komodo will come back online to buy. By the looks of it, it may not be until next year.
