However, the original series creator doesn't seem to approve of the studio's distribution methods.
Recently, Sopranos series creator David Chase spoke with Deadline about his frustrations with the news that the prequel film will now be released on streaming simultaneously with theaters. This is, as you probably know, a business model that HBO Max has been testing all year.
“I don’t think, frankly that I would’ve taken the job if I knew it was going to be a day-and-date release. I think it’s awful,” Chase said.
You can really sense how important it was to these showrunners and creators to have this project released as separate from the TV show as possible. I mean, The Sopranos is practically the definition of cinematic television and pioneered the methods that many shows use today. It makes sense that they wanted an exclusive theatrical release to escape the TV world and shed that format entirely.

Chase continued, "People should go see it in a theater. It was designed to be a movie. It was… it’s beautiful as a movie. I never thought that it would be back on HBO. Never.”
Chase had a certain vision for how this film would land in the Sopranos universe and how it would coexist with the iconic show. I'm sure he never envisioned the film being shelved right next to the original work on a streaming service at its release. He wants the audience to experience this in an actual theater.
It's sad news that there are people involved who aren't happy with how the film is being handled after production. But that has been a theme with this year's day-and-date releases, from Denis Villeneuve's disappointment to ScarJo suing Disney over backend earnings.
On the bright side, hopefully, this will give more people an opportunity to watch this film at home and enjoy it with their families.
The prequel is set to be released on Oct. 1 in theaters and HBO Max.
