Teradek Bolt 4K: Better Video, Wider Range, Zero Latency

December 5, 2019
Teradek’s Bolt 4K sets a new standard for wireless video transmission. The system features up to 5,000 ft. of wireless range, a new chipset to better handle interference, and the cleanest HD and 4K wireless picture quality ever.

Teradek has been the leader in wireless video transmission for quite some time, but the company's newest system, the Bolt 4K, offers filmmakers the first 4K HDR wireless video system to provide lossless, zero-latency transmission.

Let's take a look at some of the most impressive features the Bolt 4K has to offer. But before that, here's a promo video to get you more acquainted with the series.

Zero-Latency Transmission

The Bolt 4K can transmit lossless video with zero-latency (less than 1 millisecond of delay). For those working in areas of filmmaking where even a slight delay could risk ruining a shot, including focus pullers, aerial drone pilots, and gimbal operators, the Bolt 4K will be a lifesaver.

Up to 5000' Range

The Bolt 4K comes in a number of flavors: the Bolt 4K 750, 1500, and MAX. Each one offers a different max transmission distance, which is easily identified from their respective name: The 750's range is 750 feet, the 1500's is 1500 feet, and the MAX is a whopping 5000 feet.

10-bit 4:2:2 4K Image Quality

Perhaps one of the most exciting features of the Bolt 4K, aside from its zero-latency and vast range, is its image quality. The Bolt 4K can transmit full HD and 4:2:2 4K video at up to 5000 feet line-of-sight over the 5GHz band.

It also features 10-bit image quality at every resolution up to DCI 4K, allowing users to transmit video that is crisp, color-accurate, and nearly indistinguishable from an SDI cable.

Compatibility

With the Bolt 4K, users can multicast to six receivers simultaneously, as well as mix and match TX/RX ranges. So, if a user wanted to use a Bolt 4K 750 with a Bolt 4K 1500, that's entirely possible.

HDR-10 Support

The Bolt 4K is compliant with the HLG, PQ, and HDR-10 standards, meaning it's able to offer true 10-bit HDR wireless transmission at resolutions of up to 2160p, as well as transport camera metadata, timecode, and record triggers over the wireless link.

Teradek Bolt App

Teradek also offers uses a free mobile app that allows users to manage and monitor their Bolt 4K in real-time. It allows users to pair TX/RX units update firmware, and configure every one of the Bolt 4K's features, including the Spectrum Analyzer, for detecting congestion and determining the best frequency in a given area, Range Finder, for seeing additional information about the distance between connected devices, 3D LUTs, and more remotely from mobile device.

The app even has a Quality Selection feature that allows users to choose "Maximum Quality", "Maximum Range", or "Balanced", effectively taking the guesswork out of selecting parameters.

Get it for free in the App Store or on Google Play.
