If a film’s success solely depended on its story, things would definitely be much simpler and different. However, much of the onus of a movie’s success also falls on the actors.

It is not only about how they perform their individual roles, but also about their resonance with their co-stars and their chemistry with other characters.

But don’t be fooled into thinking that “chemistry” is only synonymous with romantic relationships. In reality, every kind of relationship, whether positive or negative, that of friendship or animosity, has its own chemistry.

As a filmmaker, your job is to bring the right actors together so the chemistry shines through. As a writer, it is your duty to pack the script with moments that allow the actors to do their magic.

But how do you induce chemistry between your characters?

In this article, let’s understand everything about character chemistry.

What Is Chemistry Between Two Characters?

On-screen chemistry is an intangible yet strong connection or tension between two characters.

It’s the energy that the two share that makes the scene memorable and electrifying. Individually, both characters are solid; however, together, they just make everything better.

The Secret to Inducing Electrifying Chemistry Between Two Characters

Unless your story follows the “love at first sight” trope in romance, there’s no hurry in building chemistry between two characters. Take your time and make sure that every moment the two spend together counts.

Here are a few tried and tested ways to spark chemistry between two characters:

1. Let Them Reveal Themselves to Each Other

Genuine reactions form the core of chemistry. Thus, create enough scenes for the two characters in question to know each other, so that when they choose each other, whether as enemies or friends, the audience can relate to their decision.

At the same time, character exposition allows your actors to develop their characters more intimately, which helps with chemistry.

2. Strong Camaraderie or Strong Conflicts—You Decide

While the characters and the relationship between them are most definitely allowed to transform over the course of the story, you should pick a solid ground (friendship or animosity) to start their association.

Either they share strong similarities, or are polar opposites when it comes to their life ideals.

Once you have that decided, double down on the emotion with scenes that explore this aspect of their relationship. Banter is a tried and tested way to spark chemistry between two characters—romantically associated or not.

3. Shifting Dynamics

In reality, two people do not share a consistent relationship, even if they are emotionally close. Best friends might fall apart, or lovers may break out into a terrible fight—all the ebb and flow of any relationship keeps stirring the pot, making the flavors more interesting.

At the same time, such plot twists will allow you to explore the characters more intimately, further enhancing the chemistry between the two.

4. Stick to Conflict That Is Coherent with the Themes

Always try to align the interactions between two characters with the story's themes.

This is because misplaced character interactions can throw off audiences and kill chemistry as a whole if these scenes do not contribute effectively to the story.

Let the characters explore each other in light of the narrative's central themes, turning their chemistry into the fuel that drives the story forward.

Iconic Examples of On-Screen Chemistry

These examples range from lovers to friends to enemies. Analyze the following scenes for a better understanding of onscreen chemistry.

1. Vincent Hanna and Neil McCauley: Heat

Fighting on opposite sides of the law, Vincent Hanna and Neil McCauley’s diner confrontation has an enduring legacy for a reason.

The beauty of the rivalry between the two lies in their similarities and differences, which are emphasized throughout the movie. Both have similar problems in their lives, with loneliness gnawing at them every moment of their life; however, it is their coping mechanisms that set them apart.

Just look at the contrast in their demeanor, which is the main agent in their onscreen chemistry. Hanna is an impulsive man with power, and McCauley is a calculated risk-taker with forcibly claimed power.

Also, both Pacino and De Niro’s performances really sealed the deal for this one.

2. Kakashi Sensei and Guy Sensei: Naruto

Kakashi and Guy’s rivalry is one of the greatest highlights of Naruto. Once again, it is the contrasting demeanor that makes their interactions so engaging.

Kakashi is the silent type, who is known for his laid-back attitude, while Guy is an ardent believer in hard work, who overdoes it more often than not. However, their similarities anchor their strong relationship—both ever ready to lay down their lives for their loved ones, justice, and Leaf Village.

Seeing the various shades of their relationship over hundreds of episodes only solidifies it for the audience, highlighting their chemistry.

3. Kim Wexler and Jimmy McGill: Better Call Saul

Kim and Jimmy are my most beloved couple from recent TV. Their chemistry lies in the way they understand and protect each other.

Throughout the series, we see various instances of both conflict and harmony between them, as Jimmy bends the rules to earn money or prove himself a worthy lawyer. After a traumatic death, Kim breaks up with him, realizing that her support is enabling him to lead a life of crime.

Their chemistry feels so real because, despite opposing ideals, they share a lot of similarities—both are self-made, have the right intentions at heart despite their own twisted ways, have been betrayed by people they were loyal to, and finally, have nobody but each other in their lives.

4. Harry, Ron, and Hermione: Harry Potter

The trio represents three different backgrounds that align us with the magic world and its social systems—Ron is an underprivileged pureblood wizard, Hermione is a Muggle-born, i.e., born to non-magical folk, but she is quickly advanced in magic, and finally, Harry, a half-blood wizard, only learns about magic after he visits Hogwarts.

Hermione becomes a subtle bridge between Harry and Ron, and between Harry and the magical world, uniting them despite their differences, while she grows through her adventures with the boys.

By the end of the franchise, they embody harmony amidst adversity, and that is what makes their chemistry so memorable. Once again, their relationship blossoms over time, which allows the audience to connect with them.

5. Thelma and Louise: Thelma & Louise

Thelma and Louise win our hearts with their on-screen chemistry, driven by their dichotomous complexities and strong motivations. Both women want to break free; however, both have different definitions of what it means to be truly free.

Their road trip together opens a portal for them to explore life in ways they never have before. However, at its core, it is their shared experience as women navigating society that is the strongest glue in their bond.

6. Rick and Ilsa: Casablanca

Rick and Ilsa’s chemistry has a lot to do with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman’s performances in the lead roles.

The movie doesn’t allot much screen time to the actors together, especially their romance in Paris, which is limited to a single musical flashback montage. However, alongside the strong emotional scenes in the present, when Ilsa meets Rick at his cafe, accompanied by her husband, seeking transit visas to America, it is both the actors’ charismatic yet restrained performances that create an electrifying chemistry between them.

The way Bergman’s Ilsa looks at Bogart’s Rick when she sees him for the first time, after an entire year since she abandoned him, and requests Sam to play their song—pure chills!
