Netflix hopes Rebel Moon will become their Star Wars

Not many studios are lining up to make original intellectual properties that are expensive risks, but Netflix is willing to bet big on Zack Snyder. After what we must assume is a successful hit for them in Army of the Dead, Netflix is bringing Snyder back to create his original idea, Rebel Moon

Snyder is co-writing the script with Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten and 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad.

Described as a Star Wars-like vision, The Hollywood Reporter says that the story is about a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. A young woman with a mysterious past works to assemble a group of warriors who can help the colony survive.

Snyder told the Hollywood Reporter, “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

It definitely has shades of Seven Samurai, and the Star Wars stuff is right at the surface of any space adventure.
