The price of a C-stand or boom stand is about $100 to $150, which isn't extremely expensive on its own, but the cost can get pretty high when you consider how many of them you're going to need in order to fly your light modifiers. If you're not really in the position to drop $300 to $500 on stands, Joe Edelman has come up with two ways to build your own reflector/gobo holder out of $10 worth of PVC pipe. Check out his tutorial below:

These are all of the materials you'll need for both builds.

  • (2) 10' x 1/2" PVC pipes
  • (6) Tees
  • (8) Elbows
  • (2) 1/2" female adapters
  • (2) 1/4"-20 x 1/2" thumbnail screws, or 1/4"-20 screw
  • PVC cement
  • Rubber Mallet
  • Saw
  • PVC Pipe Cutter
  • Drill

The only other piece of equipment you'll need is a cheap light stand to hold it up, which you can get for around $20. But one optional item that will make this build a whole lot better is a super clamp, which are usually between $15 to $30. As Edelman points out, it will provide more versatility and control overall, and I highly recommend using one, since the reflector/gobo holder on its own may not be in the position you need it to be in.
