There are tons of ways to do just that, including just taping your backdrop to the wall, but if you're looking for something sturdy and robust that can support larger, heavier material, Jay P. Morgan of The Slanted Lens shows you 3 cheap DIY solutions for those who need a curved cyc, a portable backdrop setup, as well as for those with studio space who need something more permanent. Materials You'll Need

  • 1/2" plumbing pipe
  • an elbow and a plate
  • 1" conduit
  • 1 1/2" conduit
  • A-clamps
  • 2 C-stands

Metal pipe is like duct tape; it has a million uses and can save your hide when you're in a pinch. That's what Morgan uses to hang his backdrops, specifically 1" and 1 1/4" conduit. That's the cheap part of his tutorial; it gets pricey once you start including C-stands in your setup. Furthermore, you're going to need some heavy artillery for one of his backdrop setups -- a drill press. (Even though my parents are huge DIY home remodelers and have a tool shed that even Bob Villa would be jealous of, they do not have a drill press, so I'd have to pass one this one.)

Again, there are plenty of other ways to hang a backdrop. You can tape them to the wall, fork over some dough for some backdrop stands, or even jsut have a couple of buddies hold them up for you (not recommended). However, these solutions from The Slanted Lens are relatively cheap, sturdy, and can be modified to fit your needs.
