Huge Price Drops on Atomos 4K Recorders: Shogun Now $1,500 & Ninja Assassin Only $1K

Atomos Shogun 6.4 Firmware Update
Atomos is making their external monitor/recorders even more competitive with some massive price drops on both the Ninja Assassin and the Shogun

Both recorders have 7" monitors and are capable of recording 4K ProRes and Avid DNxHR. The only real difference between the two is the Ninja Assassin is HDMI only, while the Shogun has 6G-SDI in addition to HDMI. Here's a look at the price cuts on both models:

Atomos Shogun - Ninja Assassin Price Drop

Atomos has extended the functionality of their recorders significantly in the last few months with their 6.5 firmware. In future updates hopefully coming in the first half of this year, they will be able to record RAW directly to CinemaDNG from Sony, Canon, and ARRI cameras:

You can also get a free CFast card when you buy one of their tiny 1080p Ninja Star ProRes recorders:

Now I have an IT background, so I am used to seeing what happens with the price of technology over time...BUT... camera gear seems to be another animal..... these 30/40/50 percent price drops after a year or two is crazy!.... i love my Ninja and will use it for quite some time to come.... but seriously 30% drop after i have had it for 6 months!.... le sigh

You don't get a free CFast card with the Star if you are using the educational discount.

Smart move by Atomos. The biggest reason they were selling the Shogun was because of the a7s, but now that the a7sII is out with internal 4K, the demand for a 4K recorder is pretty much out the window. I'll admit, I had planned on buying a Shogun a while ago but once I saw 4K becoming available everywhere internally I took a step back. With this drop I'm interested again.

The panel itself is really spectacular for the price. Even if you're not using it to record. I've owned a SmallHD AC7, and DP7, and the Assassin is miles better in image quality.

Check the image quality compared to the a7 internal.

I'm talking strictly about the OLED panel.

There is also the benefit of continuous recording on an external recorder, vs the 29min limit on internal recording. I'm assuming that limit is still in place even on the A7sII...?

The article states "The only real difference between the two is the Ninja Assassin is HDMI only, while the Shogun has 6G-SDI in addition to HDMI". Is that true that it's the "only real difference"? Are there differences in some of the recording options too?

Not sure on that, but if you look at what each come with, the Assassin only comes with a few cords and a soft case, while the Shogun comes with a custom hard case with a ton of accessories... that might be worth the extra $500 in itself.

I wouldn't call it a soft case necessarily. It has a soft material but it's rock hard.

buy an Odyssey 7q+. Atomos is cheap plastic and screens are easily broken. My 7q has been dropped on concrete twice, not a single scratch.
