If anyone understands the importance of location, it’s filmmakers, and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) is counting on it. The organization’s I Look Up Film Challenge is seeking three-minute films that highlight the power of architecture to create solutions and uplift communities.

There’s a $2500 cash prize for both Grand Prize and People’s Choice winners, and the top three films will screen at the Architecture & Design Film Festival in New York and Los Angeles and the SXSW Eco Conference in Austin this fall.

For inspiration, check out this short created by Rural Studio, finalists from last year’s contest, which highlights the power of architecture to create social change in a small Alabama town.

Note that the contest is only open to filmmakers in the United States. In order to qualify, you must complete the simple online registration form by July 10, and submit your film by August 14. The judging period, conducted by a yet-unannounced panel of industry experts, runs August 29-September 12. Public voting occurs August 29-October 3, and winners are announced in October.

So the next time you’re out and about in your neighborhood, take an extra close look at the buildings you pass every day, find yourself a great story, and register for the challenge!
