What Are the Top 100 Movies of All Time... Statistically?
There are so many ways to judge films...but what about a way to judge them using all the ways?
What do you think are the 100 best movies of all time? And how did you come up with that answer? I frequently check out new lists by critics and other metrics, but there's always such a weird divide. Sometimes people value one thing over another.
And when you just have the public vote, only popular movies with the most votes actually feel like they are considered.
Well, I am not alone in my conundrum.
Reddit user ReelStats felt the same kind of pain. Back in April, they made a list of the top 250 movies based on averaging ratings from 13 different websites. That list was cool, but 13 didn't seem expansive enough as parameters to find the greatest movies.
Well, they didn't think so either, and that's why they beefed up their research using all of the following sites...Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, IMDb, Letterboxd, TMDb, Trakt, JustWatch, Blu-Ray, FilmAffinity, Douban, Naver, MUBI, and Critics Choice, TSPDT, iCheckMovies, MoviesLens, RateYourMusic, Criticker, the Polish Filmweb, the Russian Kinopoisk, the Czech-Slovak CSFD, the Dutch Moviemeter, and the French Senscritique.
These made the data collection feel more worldly and gave a greater scope of how people view cinema.
Each website was weighted according to their Alexa ranking and their number of votes compared to others. As ReelStats explains, "For example, if The Godfather has hundreds of thousands of votes on Letterboxd but only a couple thousand on Metacritic, Letterboxd would be weighted more heavily. After obtaining the weighted averages, I then added the movie's iCheckMovies' favs/checks ratio and TSPDT ranking, if applicable. Regarding TSPDT, I included the top 2000 movies; as an example of my calculations, Rear Window's ranking of #41 would add (2000-41)/2000=0.9795 points to its weighted average. I removed movies that had <7-8K votes on IMDb, as these mostly had low ratings and votes across different sites as well."
Now, there's a new list in town.
You can view the whole thing on Letterboxd, but check out the tops here!
