The first time I really saw and loved Tommy Lee Jones was when he handed the reins over to Will Smith in Men in Black. I was just a kid, but his voice and poise stood out to me as stoic and comforting, even when he was being dryly snarky.

I'm not sure there's a better supporting role out there than Jones in this movie. I saw this film when I was a little older and was completely blown away by Jones leaning into the chase and separating the man and his mission from his own mission to get the man... if that makes sense.

Jones won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor by turning a potentially one-note antagonist into the magnetic center of the film. His delivery of "I don't care" sticks out in my head as an all-time Hollywood moment.

2. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell – No Country for Old Men (2007)

3. Agent K – Men in Black (1997)

As I said at the top, this was my introduction to Tommy Lee Jones, and it was a fun one. Not only does he hold his own here, but he steals scenes from Will Smith and showcases a deadpan style that makes me laugh out loud.

This movie has so many insane moments, but Jones plays Agent K with complete sincerity. He treats alien traffic stops like speeding tickets and always memorizes the facts in his brain. It's a laid-back performance, but it has so much energy under the surface.

4. Clay Shaw / Clay Bertrand – JFK (1991)

His work got him his first Oscar nomination.

It's a little flamboyant, a little weird, and very spooky. There's a menacing sophistication to him that aligns with the political thriller.

Okay, so I had never heard of this movie until I was researching this article. I had no idea Tommy Lee Jones directed anything. This movie rocks, and if you haven't seen it, go rent it today.

Jones delivered a raw modern-day Western about redemption, border politics, and loyalty. It feels so modern and so prescient. Jones takes the heart of the Southwest and lets it pass over him, giving us a non-linear story we have to keep up with.
