Normally, product leaks have to be taken with a grain of salt because they tend to have sketchy or out of date information. But when a video promo leaks from the manufacturer itself, well, that's a completely different story.  That's the case with a pair of videos leaked out of Canon that showcases the specs for their next-generation Canon 90D DSLR and the EOS M6 Mk. II mirrorless camera.

The Canon 90D is showing off a 32.5 APS-C CMOS sensor, and DIGIC 8 Image processor, which can shoot 4K video at a tepid 30fps, full HD video at 120fps. The 90D also enjoys face and eye detection, the latter in Servo AF mode. Users can follow the action with the touch screen vari-angle LCD.  The electronic viewfinder also offers 100% sensor coverage and 45 point cross-type autofocus.

The 90D also enjoys wireless data transfer through the Canon App.

Other specs include:

  • 32.5mp APS-C Sensor
  • 220K dot RGB + IR metering sensor
  • Optical viewfinder and face detection
  • 100% optical viewfinder coverage
  • 10fps continuous shooting during viewfinder shooting (AF fixed/tracking)
  • 45AF points (all cross-type)
  • Eye detection AF (Servo AF)
  • DIGIC 8 imaging processor
  • Video: 4K at 30p/25p, Full HD at 120p/100p
  • Touchscreen Vari-Angle LCD
  • Dust and water-resistant
  • Battery grip BG-E14
  • Auto image data transfer to smart devices via Wi-Fi

Usually, if Canon is going to market test a new feature like in-body image stabilization (IBIS), they introduce it to the middle range models like the 90D. It's what they did on the 60D with Dual Pixel AF. So we had high hopes for IBIS in the 90D. But alas, it doesn't look like that's meant to be.

Also note that there are no dual SD card slots mentioned in the video, like in previous reports. But at least Canon is bringing eye detection to the party, in keeping with that feature's popularity in the market.

Canon's M6 Mk. II

The leak also continued with Canon's second-generation EOS M6. The M6 Mk. II looks to be nearly identical to the 90D in specs but in a mirrorless form factor, but there are a few additional cool features including Raw Burst Shooting at up to 30fps, a flip-up LCD screen for shooting selfies and vlogging, and a cool removable electronic viewfinder that connects through the hot-shoe.

Here are the other specs to compare with the 90D:

  • DIGIC 8 imaging processor
  • Up to 14fps continuous shooting
  • Enhanced high-precision AF
  • Eye detection AF
  • 4K video, Full HD at 120fps
  • RAW burst up to 30fps
  • Up to ISO 26500
  • AF capable down to -5 EV
  • Removable OLED viewfinder
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity

The M6 Mk II looks more exciting than the 90D. I really like that 30fps raw burst mode, even though there is a crop when using it. And I also think the removable EVF is asking for trouble. How many are going to lose that in their first year? And what's the over-under on the cost to replace it being $99 or more?

No word on pricing or availability for either model, yet, and it's important to keep in mind that since this is a leak, feature specs may have already evolved. But we'll likely get a much clearer picture sooner than we think, especially with IBC right around the corner.
