Iran Throws Oscar-Nominated Writer in Jail
The human rights violations here are very serious. We pray for Mehdi Mahmoudian's safety and the safety of everyone in Iran.

'It Was Just An Accident'
When you sit down to make a movie, you have to realize that the story you're creating has the power to change the world and to topple the most evil of regimes.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Mehdi Mahmoudian, the Oscar-nominated co-writer of the critically acclaimed film It Was Just An Accident, who was arrested yesterday in Tehran.
The arrest follows his participation in a joint statement signed by 17 prominent activists and artists condemning the "mass and systematic killing" of Iranian citizens and directly naming Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as responsible for the nation's "irreversible ruin."
This is a brave action that every filmmaker should see and feel inspired by, as we hope for his safe return.
Let's dig into the story.

A Crackdown on High-Profile Dissent
Look, I am not an authority about what's going on in Iran, so please turn to your trusted news sources there. But I do know that they are slaughtering civilians in one of the most extreme violent situations happening right now.
The document signed by the 17 activists is a scathing indictment of the current regime. It's called "Khamenei Is Responsible for These Horrific Times in Iran," it describes the government's actions as a "betrayal of the country" and an "assault on national security."
Key demands from the statement include:
- Justice for those killed in recent protests.
- Immediate release of all political prisoners.
- Prosecution of those who ordered acts of repression.
- A Democratic Referendum to determine Iran's political future.
The signatories warned that if these paths are not pursued, Iran remains condemned to a "devastating cycle of violence."
Alongside Mahmoudian, fellow signatories Vida Rabbani and Abdullah Momeni were also taken into custody by a corrupt regime attempting to stop dissent.
These brave souls have stood up against the Islamic Republic and called for the formation of a national front to organize a referendum and establish a constituent assembly.
Other notable signatories include:
- Jafar Panahi: Oscar-nominated director of It Was Just An Accident.
- Mohammad Rasoulof: Director of the Academy Award-nominated The Seed of the Sacred Fig.
- Narges Mohammadi: Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.
- Nasrin Sotoudeh: Sakharov Prize Winner for Freedom of Thought.
From Prison to the Oscars
The timing of the arrest is particularly poignant. Mahmoudian, a longtime human rights activist, is also a nominee for Best Original Screenplay at the 98th Academy Awards.
We need to get him safely out of Iran and to America to celebrate his achievement.
It Was Just An Accident, directed by Jafar Panahi, and has become a global cinematic phenomenon since winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2025.
The film is also a frontrunner for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars and has won major awards from the New York Film Critics Circle and the Gotham Awards.
In a moving statement released yesterday, Jafar Panahi detailed his deep personal and professional bond with Mahmoudian, whom he first met while they were both imprisoned before.
"Mehdi Mahmoudian is not just a human rights activist and a prisoner of conscience; he is a witness, a listener, and a rare moral presence—a presence whose absence is immediately felt, both inside prison walls and beyond them." — Jafar Panahi
Summing It All Up
The international film community is expected to increase pressure on Iranian authorities for the release of Mahmoudian and his colleagues.
We'll try to keep you up to date on that.
This should be a stark reminder that movies have a ton of power. They can topple dictators and bring light to different aspects of the world. They are so very important, and we need more artists making bold stories and taking on these grave injustices.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
