DSLRs Not Dead! Nikon Still Releasing Firmware Updates for These Popular DSLR Camera Models
The Nikon D6 and the D780 might be ancient compared to their more modern mirrorless siblings, but they’re not dead, as Nikon is still releasing helpful firmware updates for the models.

While you might have thought that all DSLR cameras were rounded up and buried at this point, despite media coverage (of which we’re partly responsible) making it seem like it’s mirrorless or bust moving forward, there are many, many working videographers, photographers, and hybrid content creators who still regularly use their favorite DSLR cameras—and do so quite well.
And while their mirrorless siblings might get all the new releases and splashier updates, these Nikon DSLRs are still going strong, and the company is still releasing firmware updates for popular models like the D6 and the D780.
Let’s take a look at the latest firmware updates for the D6 (version 1.71) and the D780 (version 1.21) and explore what these minor but significant updates are set to offer.
Nikon DSLR Firmware Updates
So, both of these DSLR cameras were released in 2020, which might have been one of the last great years for the DSLR camera model before the mirrorless revolution completely took over. If anything, though, the fact that the DSLR era lasted so long and is technically still going is absolutely impressive, as Nikon could be credited with developing the first DSLR camera, the D1, back in 1999, giving this specific line over 20 years of service.
The D6 in particular is still no slouch, offering 4K UHD Video Recording at 30 fps and plenty of the highest-end available specs and features for a working photo and video camera today.
The updates to these cameras aren’t major in terms of pushing any of the limits they're capable of, since, let’s face it, they’ve certainly hit them. Instead, these updates just fix some minor issues that mostly have to do with photography.

Nikon D6 Firmware Update Version 1.71:
- Fixed the following issues:
- Photos taken would sometimes be underexposed with a D-type lens attached.
- Recalling shooting functions would sometimes limit the shutter speed to 1/250 s with auto FP high-speed sync.
Nikon D780 Firmware Update Version 1.21
- Fixed an issue where photos taken would sometimes be underexposed when the zoom was adjusted during burst photography in high-speed continuous release mode.
