A new firmware update is here for the Nikon ZR, which is good news. There’s also more good news: the company has shared plans for major new features like open gate recording and a desqueeze display, but those updates aren’t set to be incorporated into the ZR until 2027.
So, a bit of good news and a potential future good news situation here.
Still, Nikon’s announcement of its upcoming firmware version 2.00 for the ZR isn’t nothing, and it does show a good sign of things to come. Although if any owners or potential owners were expecting more, it’s understandable to wish that all the good news were here already.

Nikon ZR Firmware Update Announcement
Today’s announcement from Nikon is that firmware version 2.00 for the Nikon ZR, released about a year ago today as the company’s first full-frame sensor camera in the Z Cinema series and as part of the new era following Nikon’s acquisition of RED Digital Cinema, is coming soon.
Here’s a full list of the features planned for inclusion in this firmware update, aimed at further advancing reactive capabilities and workflows for a wide range of ZR users, including high-end filmmakers and run-and-gun content creators.
- Support for Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB when recording in H.265 format, delivering compact file sizes with high color-grading latitude.
- A new option for selecting the level of [High ISO NR] available during H.265 Log recording, enabling image rendering tailored to the creator’s intent and the tone of the work.
- Support for focus peaking display during recording in the R3D NE* format, enabling more precise focus confirmation.
This firmware version 2.00 is scheduled to release later this year, although a date has not yet been revealed.
Future Nikon ZR Updates
Perhaps the bigger news, though, is that the company has shared that it is developing other firmware updates to support more frequently requested features, including open gate recording and a desqueeze display for use with anamorphic lenses.
Nikon has officially said its goal is to incorporate these next updates into the ZR in 2027.
Again, no exact dates have been shared, but this broad roadmap is encouraging, if not just a bit frustrating that it isn’t out now. Still, we look forward to reviewing more info when we get it.
