Every year, it feels like Awards Season adds another wrinkle. And this year, we're all talking about the Oscars shortlist, or those movies that are eligible for nomination for the Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the shortlists in 12 categories for the 2026 Oscars, and we got to see which films are emerging as potential powerhouses.

The shortlisted categories were Best International Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Cinematography, Best Song, Best Animated Short, Best Documentary Short, and Best Live Action Short. Ten films, meanwhile, are moving forward in Best Casting, Best Sound, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Visual Effects, and Best Score.

Out of the 12 categories they released, Sinners and Wicked: For Good were listed as eligible in 8 categories.

Best Casting Shortlist

This is a new category. So, how do you vote on who did the best casting work?

Academy members will be invited to view excerpts from the shortlisted films and pre-recorded interviews with their casting directors on Friday, January 9, 2026, in Los Angeles and London, and in New York on Saturday, January 10, 2026.

Then they can vote after that.

Academy members will be invited to view excerpts from each of the shortlisted films beginning Saturday, January 10, 2025, in the San Francisco Bay area, London and New York, followed by Los Angeles on Sunday, January 11, 2026.

Academy members from all branches were invited to participate in the preliminary round of voting and must have met a minimum viewing requirement to be eligible to vote in the category.

In the nominations round, Academy members from all branches are invited to opt in to participate and must view all 15 shortlisted films to vote.

While we don't get shortlists for directing, writing, or acting categories, and many others, you can get a leg up on your Oscar predictions with these shortlists and see which movies are standing out.
The complete Oscar nominations in all 24 categories will be announced on Jan. 22nd.
