In this week's rumor mill, Bloomberg floated the leaked idea that Warner Bros. is very close to rebooting the Harry Potterseries for HBO Max. Each book would comprise one season of television and go more in-depth than the films.
J.K. Rowling will serve as a consultant on the project, but the show would have its own showrunner.
Not much else is known about the series and how close it actually might be. It feels like the Radcliffe-led movies ended only a few years ago, you'd be wrong. They ended in 2011, so over a decade ago. During that time, WB has tried to capitalize on the Fantastic Beasts movies, which have never broken out at the box office.
The Potter series is one of the most valuable pieces of IP in all of Hollywood, but it has been hard to get the projects right. Many fans sounded off on social media, calling for new stories and characters.
Still, it's not hard to see why WB wants to make this move. They can attract eyeballs to their streamer and have a show that's guaranteed to run for at least seven seasons. And they can get another generation hooked on something they have at their theme parks and can make money off for decades to come.
