Trope Evolution: The Retired Legend Who Gets Pulled Back In
Hollywood’s favorite comeback story!

'Nobody' (2021)
A nobody in the crowd who stands out; quietly sipping coffee in a Parisian cafe, or sweeping a shop floor right before closing, or serving the best streetside Chinese food.
Then, something happens and changes everything, like a fierce and sudden storm. You might already know which screenwriting trope I’m talking about.
The retired legend who gets pulled back in.
In this article, let’s trace the evolution of this iconic story trope that refuses to fade.
What Is the “Retired Legend Who Gets Pulled Back In” Trope?
In this narrative premise, the protagonist is retired, living away from his past (with or without a new identity), but is forced to return to work when a life-changing event occurs.
If I had to compare writing tropes in a Venn diagram, the “one last job” and “the retired legend who gets pulled back in” trope in screenwriting would intersect somewhere right in the middle (unless it’s an entire franchise, like John Wick).
Here’s the classic formula for this trope:
- An individual with a reputation and a dark past
- A retirement that was meant to last a lifetime, but won’t
- An inciting event that stirs up everything
- The return of the badass
- The arc of redemption
The Evolution of the Retired Legend Who Gets Pulled Back in Trope
Long before Hollywood, ancient storytelling set the template for this evergreen trope.
Heroes like Odysseus returned to battle after years of yearning for peace. When it came to cinema, filmmakers had a proper blueprint in hand.
Before the 2000s, the trope was all about celebrating the legendary protagonist. Their retirement would be a real loss to their profession, as current professionals still remain, and the narratives focused on good vs. bad or told stories of revenge or rescue that ended in triumph.
However, since the 2000s, these narratives have undergone a significant shift in approach.
1. Redemption Replaced Triumph
Today’s retired legend is an anti-hero. He has a checkered past, is extremely flawed, and is due for redemption. The storm in the sea is just what they need to be pulled back into their tangled life.
At times, the storm could be an estranged loved one in danger. Or even their former team members calling them for “one last job,” which we all know never ends at one. Or, even more anti-heroic, where they embark on a reckless plan to prove their relevance to the world.
2. Forgotten in a World Where They Used to Be the Most Important
Some retired legends today battle with a fear of irrelevance. The point that I mentioned right before this is motivated by the same fear. They were top professionals in their field, but today their services are considered obsolete. The realization that they’re more of a liability than an asset is crucial to the journeys in many contemporary stories.
3. Genre Expansion
While this trope was long associated with action, it now appears across genres. Movies such as The Incredibles, Halloween, and Blade Runner 2049 have set their narratives against different versions of the retired legend who gets pulled back into the story.
Movies Where the Retired Legend Was Pulled Back In
1. John Wick

3. Nobody
An ex-elite government operative who’s now the perfect suburban ghost breaks into action after years of retirement. After a home invasion exposes his perceived weakness to his family, triggering long-buried instincts, he decides to fight back.
From there, it’s a race to finish, as fate pits him against the most powerful crime lord in the city.
4. The Dark Knight Rises
A retired Batman, Bruce Wayne, is living life as a recluse until he is forced to return to face Bane, his newest adversary, and save Gotham once again.
