Sony APS-C Shooters Just Got Some Wide Angle Love
If you're filming with a Sony APS-C camera, you and your gear just got a whole lot of love.
While Sony has been heavily rooted in the full-frame camera space for the past few releases, the APS-C crowd still has a lot of options with the a6000 series of cameras.
Now those options got a whole lot better with the release of three new wide-angle E-mount lenses. They include a 10-20mm power zoom f/4, a super fast 15mm f/1.4 prime, and an 11mm f/1.8 prime. While these may be very wide lenses, they do fill a specific niche in both video and photography applications, especially if you're a Terrence Malick fan.
All of the Wides, All the Time
The three new Sony wide-angle APS-C E-mount options include the following.
Sony E PZ 10-20mm F4 G
E PZ 10-20mm f/4 G power zoom ultra-wide lens
Sony says this is the world's smallest and lightest weight ultra-wide angle lens, which will make handheld shooting much more comfortable. It features a constant f/4, excellent autofocus (AF; minimum distance of 8 inches/.02 meters), and smooth bokeh.
Pricing is set at $750 and will be available in July 2022.
Sony E 15mm F1.4 G
E 15mm f/1.4 G prime lens
Sony promises this to be a versatile and lightweight lens that is ideal for photographers and cinematographers alike. It also features excellent AF and overall controls, plus is quite fast at f/1.4. The lens also features low distortion and terrific resolution, corner-to-corner, and beautiful bokeh. The minimum focusing distance is 6.7 inches (0.17 meters).
The price is $750, and it will drop in July 2022.
Sony E 11mm F1.8
E 11mm f/1.8 G ultra-wide prime lens
This very wide APS-C lens is fast at f/1.8, compact, and Sony says it has a full-frame 35mm equivalent of 16.5mm. While the need for such an ultra-wide prime might be more limited, depending on what you're shooting, it could be a good lens to keep in your bag. This lens is perfect for vloggers and features excellent bokeh.
Unlike its siblings above, pricing is a little less at $550, and it will be available in July 2022.
With these three new glass options, Sony now offers 70 different E-mount lenses to choose from, ideal for pretty much any situation for filmmakers, content creators, and photographers in the field or a studio setting.
On the Topic of Need
You may be thinking, "Do I need any or all of these new wide-angle lenses?"
The answer is, it depends. Having more lens options is always a great thing, especially for APS-C shooters. Sony makes excellent glass, and all three lenses have terrific bokeh, AF, and are quite compact. All three will set you back $2,250, which is a steal for all the features you'll be getting.
