Taika is pretty busy this year, with Jojo Rabbit coming to theaters in the fall while he preps work on Thor: Love and Thunder, but it appears he has time to act in James Gunn's Suicide Squad rebootquel, reports Deadline

The filmmaker's role is unknown for now, but he will join the cast of DC characters that include: Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), and Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag. Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Flula Borg, Steve Agee, and Nathan Fillion are also set for the film, which promises to do for these villainous anti-heroes what Gunn did for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel and Gunn parted ways after some controversial tweets got the director ousted last year from directing the third Guardians movie,  but as of this March, Gunn is officially back for the sequel. Gunn was not waiting for Disney to make up their minds during that time, however, so he signed on for Warner Bros. next chapter in the Suicide Squad franchise.

The first Suicide Squad movie took a lot of cues from the original Guardians film, so it'll be interesting to see how Gunn tackles the story. The addition of Taika seems like the movie will have more comedy in it as well.

It'll be nice to see if both these guys can breathe some fresh air into a DC Universe that already seems to be embracing levity, with Aquaman surfing to over a billion dollars at the box office.

It's crazy that Taika has time to be in this movie and juggle his other projects. He directed an episode of the upcoming Star Wars streaming series The Mandalorian for Disney+. He has also appeared at all the Marvel Comic-Con events while being in post on JoJo. I think it's a great sign he's joining the cast and I hope this movie turns out to be fun and interesting.
