RED Has Dropped the DRAGON Upgrade Price Back to $9,500

We got our first glimpse of the new WEAPON camera, and now DRAGON upgrade pricing is back to what it was before December 2014.

While it was actually decided over the weekend and is unlikely a response to the ALEXA Mini announcement (though I guess you never know), Jarred Land and RED have dropped the upgrade price (for all upgrades) back to $9,500. That includes EPIC MX to EPIC DRAGON and SCARLET to SCARLET DRAGON and SCARLET to EPIC DRAGON ($9,500 x 2).

The price originally went up $3K to $12,500 because of a lower volume of upgrades, but now, in anticipation of a rise in upgrade volume, it's back to just under $10K. Jarred has said this will be at least until NAB 2015, but we will see if it is extended later than that.

Here is what Brent said on REDUser:

We will get that price changed on Monday back to $9500. If you pre-paid for the upgrade at $12,500 but have not had it done yet, you will get the $9500 net price.

Jarred basically announced it over the weekend (his response below):

Let us upgrade from Epic-MX to the Dragon sensor for $9500..

ok. How about just from now till NAB then?

And Jarred before that:

If we hit the numbers then it will all balance out since its quarterly and those that paid the extra $12500 price we can credit the difference back @ NAB towards whatever is next.

So to recap, pricing is back to $9,500 for all DRAGON upgrades, but likely only until NAB. It will be interesting to see what comes next and if we'll get more details about the WEAPON upgrade before the show.

Nice post! Jarred and RED have to be freaking out over the new ALEXA mini. Hope it didn't ruin their breakfast.. What the hell is RED weapon anyways? If it helps with their rolling shutter issues I'm super interested! Thanks for the price drop info..

Very cool. The $3,000 upgrade increase kind of bent me out of shape. I'm back in consideration now.

For the scarlet, I always felt paying almost as much for the upgrade as I did for the original camera body put me off. With all the cool competition on the horizon the $3000 increase was just even more off the mark for me.

Still love the original camera though.

They are called Red, but the Alexa Mini kinda made their faces white. Good for the market if they lower the price. Next step: delivering on schedule (I know: LOL !)

So Alexa Mini on one end and KiniMini 4K at the other - both insane images, one 10x more expensive than the other and RED stuck in the middle trying to figure it all out. Good Luck.
