Hands-On with Freefly's MIMIC, Plus their Giant ALTA Drone

Freefly brings out two new big toys at NAB.

Announced yesterday, Freefly continues pushing the gimbal market with their intuitive MIMIC system (no more joystick!) for controlling the MōVI. If that wasn't enough, they put an Alexa on a drone that flies for 15 minutes at a time.

MIMIC:

  • Price / Available TBD
  • Existing users of the MoVI can join MIMIC's beta program for $495.
  • Range: 1200 feet, line of sight

Alta:

  • 15lb payload for 14 minutes
  • Mounting a gimbal on the top or the bottom
  • Available in June (pre-order now for $1,000 deposit)
  • $8495

The copter is really nice and their stuff is good quality, and this is coming from their competition.

Now, you still have to add the price for a Movi gimbal if you want to use it with it. It may not be an economical solution to budget indie filmmakers needing something cheaper. Excuse the shameful plug ;) but our Gryphon Dynamics can be had with a gimbal for less than $10k, and these frames are super lightweight and really strong, capable of lifting 15lbs for 10-12 mins at a time.

We are working on bringing even more affordable heavy lifters multirotors for those in a budget, check our indiegogo campaign soon.
