Panasonic GH4 Gets Native Anamorphic Support & New V-Log L Gamma

The v2.2 firmware update rolls out new features that anamorphic shooters will love.

We caught up with Panasonic in their mysteriously lit booth at NAB:

  • 4x3 aspect ratio capturing function, but capturing at @ 3328x2496
  • With a 2x anamorphic lens you get a 2.66:1 aspect ratio with shallow DOF
  • 10-bit mode disables internal recording but outputs 2880x2160 4:3 image to a monitor in 10-bit 422
  • V-Log L (unannounced) marks Panasonic's first foray into Log gamma on these cameras
  • Releasing late April

Still no internal guidelines for framing 2.35:1 or other AR's?
Is it really too much to ask for in 2015? :/
Looks like ducktape will never go out of style

It seems like V-log isn't coming with this firmware which is a shame. I wish we had a more concrete release window but nonetheless this update is great for anamorphic shooters.

I am confused. Is Vlog for anamorphic only? Panasonic needs to be a little less vague here.

Vlog is just cameras gamma setting.
you can use what ever lenses you want, be it anamorphic or not

Dean, V-Log L once released will work with any lens, but the upcoming firmware update will only include the Anamorphic feature (and the additional shutter speed for stills). Here's a short clip featuring both V-Log L and a variety of Anamorphic lenses. vimeo.com/125215026

I need a comparison between 2.66:1 and the industry standard 2.39:1. Can anyone help?

I'm a little confused. Isn't the 4:3 photo mode video recording full 4k? So why is the anamorphic version only 3.3k? Will the crop be even higher than the standard 2.3x crop of the gh4? Then it would come close to 3x crop which would be extremely high.

I would ve loved to see 21:9 4,5k recording. It's around the same amount of pixels compared to 4k 16:9 and that way there'd only be a 2x crop + even higher resolution. This can't have been so hard so implement....

Very interesting. Nice to see Panasonic taking note to what we need in the GH4. I think they already have done enough for a $1800 camera so everything after this point puts a week-long smile on my face.

Still a little confused on the V-Log though. Are we getting it with the 2.2v update or will we have to wait another 6 months?

I've heard rumours of V-log being a paid update. Any solid news on this?

I was told on Monday at NAB by a Panasonic rep that nothing has been confirmed yet as far as V-Log goes, and he couldn't say whether it would be something that would be a paid upgrade or not.
